Woodroffe School Aptitude Test

Dear all – a long shot, but I’m hoping someone here can offer advice about the ‘aptitude test’ for the Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis?

We live in Colyford, my DD has sat the 11+ for Colyton Grammar, DS is in year 8 there. But I’m wondering about Woodroffe as a second choice if she doesn’t score well enough.

But having read the notes on Woodroffe’s school web page about the aptitude test, I have no idea how to help her. She’s not great at drawing, and I know nothing about ‘art aesthetics’!

I’ve left it far too late, of course. The test is on Saturday. She’s keen to have a go, but I don’t know what to tell her about what to expect…

Does anyone know of a website that explains how to approach the questions about criticising a painting?

Has anyone had their DS or DD take the test?

I’m afraid the idea of taking her for the test only occurred to me this evening – stupidly, I had been under the impression that only those with siblings there were eligible outside the feeder-schools. Good grief!

Does anyone have any insights?

Well I knew it was a long shot that someone might spot this and have some advice!

In case anyone else is in the same position next year, and finds this thread...

The 'drawing task' object was a bottle - not sure if that changes each year?

The 'sculpture task' was to make a 'rocket' out of sheets of paper. Not what I expected at all. (I assumed it would be plasticine!)

The final task was to answer questions about Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. Things like 'describe the girl's expression' and 'what is her job?'.

So altogether not a very demanding test - and probably one that does a good job of selecting those who are good at art?

I might update this in a couple of weeks when we find out the result, if there's any interest?

All the best!

Is this a new thing at Woodroffe then? I have to admit that I knew nothing about it until reading your post. I know they got a new Head - is this something they have introduced?

Malbecfan - I don't know when it started, but I was chatting to someone whilst queuing outside to get in.

She said that her eldest did the test two years ago - so this must be at least the third year?

Having said that, my eldest went to an open day there two years ago, and I don't think there was any mention of the test then? But he decided he didn't want to go anyway (he's ASD; he didn't like 'the smell' of the school. Good grief!)

So we didn't pursue it - but certainly at Seaton Primary, there was no information about an Aptitude Test for Woodroffe. However, at the time, they didn't 'encourage' taking the 11+ for Colyton Grammar either.

He was one of three that got a place at the Grammar school from his year. I know of only one who went to Woodroffe, but she already had a sibling there, I think? So presumably would not have needed to take the test...?
