A levels for medicine

Dd has to pick her a level options tomorrow and is struggling at the moment as she wants to do medicine and so has always said that she’d do biology chemistry and maths with an AS in either Spanish or an EPQ but has started toying with the idea of biology chemistry and history with an AS in maths this morning. She really loves history and unfortunately her school doesn’t offer it as an AS but is sure she wants to study medicine and so doesn’t want to put herself at a disadvantage in applying. Would not having the full maths a level do this? We know the unis say that maths isn’t necessary if have biology and chemistry but we’re wondering if it’s a sort of unwritten preference

Or start with 4 and drop one in a few weeks ? Can then have a go and see which ones they enjoy the most

mumsneedwine she would start with 4 either way as if She picks history she’d do AS maths but if not she’d do an AS in Spanish so doesn’t want to pick history and drop it as she wouldn’t then be able to get an extra AS

DH is a medic and didn’t do biology 😱 said the first year was harder work for him but after that it was fine. Maths is useful for stats in research and working out drug titration but that’s about it. DD in the same position and is going biology, chemistry, history as she loves history so much.

And her school doesn’t do AS anymore

There's a bit of Maths in BMAT and UCAT so if she decides not to do Maths A-level, try not to get too rusty as she will need the mental agility for these tests.

She went for history but has the option to continue maths to the full a level as well if she wants to- 4 a levels would be a lot so we’ll cross our fingers that she finds an AS in maths is enough for medicine.
