Being on holiday for gcse results

Were looking at going on holiday to florida next year (DDs choice). Weve got to go in the summer holidays but she has her GCSE results at the end. If we look at going at the beginning it's working out above our budget. Shes not bothered about getting her results while we're away but I'm concerned with enrolling her in college? Anyone else done this/had problems?

Unless she is going into the 6th form at her own school, and pretty confident she'll meet all the criteria, I wouldn't be away on GCSE results day.

Yes, agree, I wouldn't be away on results day if there were any chance I might not make the criteria for my chosen post-16 destination. What is she planning to do Op? A lot of DD's friends has to change base on their GCSE results so it was a good thing they were about.

No. It’s much too important to not be there. Have had 3 DC go through it and yes you do need to be there on the day

i think you should come back for results day. We go away in the summer, but its been GCSE/exams the last couple of years, so we have come back in time. Your daughter thinks she wont mind, but thats because its so far away. If shes done her GCSEs, she will likely be finishing school in June anyway

At our school they get posted out if you aren’t there to collect them. They aren’t emailed. So could be quite a few days before you get them.
You’ll need to check the enrolment process at her 6th form / college of choice - if she doesn’t get the results for her course choices what happens?

Dd got hers online but had to collect them from the school and take them to the college and register on the Friday after results. Might be different now as this was 4 years ago

How confident are you/she/her teachers that she will get what she needs to do the course at college? If there's any doubt whatsoever that she might not make the grade, you need to be here to talk alternative options. However, college enrolment is often the following week so changes can be made then.

It's tricky. I know DD wanted to be there on the day to celebrate/commiserate with her friends! If you can be back in time, I would.

Our won't email, they have to be collected, either in person or by someone with signed authority & photo ID. I think it's foolish to be away.

Depends on what she does after results

My Ds is getting results 22nd, then enrollment interview at 6th form where his subjects are decided the day after, based on.his grades (he wants to do subjects he needs 7s for)

So it depends on your set-up, and your school system

We are not going on fancy hols this year, sadly, as the only week we could do was that week, and we felt we just have to be around those days

We had to go to the college on day as Dd don't get the required grades. They still let her do the course after a 2hour queue based on her previous interview. Not sure what we have done if we were on holiday as college were only doing drop in on results day. If she staying at 6th form at school maybe different for you

I’ve seen where you have to go to the sixth form college the SAME day! Which for us will be ridiculous as we live over 100 miles away. It’s not this year but I expect to work something out with the (new) school.

You need to find out what the arrangements are at the colleges she is interested in. The FE colleges I worked for did not require you to enrol on GCSE results day. Enrolment days would usually be in the last week of August or the first week of September.

FE colleges will be busy dealing with their current students’ Maths & English results, so although there will be staff available to discuss options for those prospective students who have had unexpected results, there is no immediate need for those discussions to happen on results day.

My daughter is getting them e-mailed to her on the results day, the college she is going to has a slightly later enrolment day for students who are away at the time. Have to say never crossed my mind when booking our annual holiday though, was never going to be a problem.

My family had emigrated by results day, I got them over a fax, called all my mates, it was great. In this day with FaceTime I'd go on holiday!

MrsMop a lot of schools won't email results or don't have a portal where they can be accessed. The only options are to collect them or have them posted.

A friend's son turned up for 6th form at DD's school, and the school weren't expecting him because he was away on results day and didn't bother registering him for 6th form.

It is a bad idea to be away for results day.

Our 6th form college gives out enrollment times. My eldest dd had to go in on the Friday, ie the day after results day, but this year my younger dd has to go in on the Thursday afternoon ie the very same day. We were only notified of the time last week. The college has been quite clear that they are over subscribed so if you don't enroll on time then they won't guarantee a place. I am naturally a risk averse, sensible person so we are not away for gcse or a level results days. However, I will say that I have friends who are more relaxed about this and are going away anyway. I think much depends on your daughter's likely results. If she's likely to get all grades 7,8,or9s then it's pretty clear to me that any college would accept her at pretty much anytime. If her results are less certain and there's a risk she will only just scrape in, then you would IMHO be doing her a disservice by being away.

It varies on what your school system is like.

Some schools email, others don't.
Some schools enrol in the day or day after, some don't.

Dd went in for her results. If she hadn't they'd have been posted to her iirr so would have arrived a couple of days later. Not sure if there was an alternative email route or the option to phone in.

Only one of the local schools did enrolment that day. Although we did email to accept her place at her new school sixth form, as they'd originally said to, there was no response initially. The day after they acknowledged it but then said the enrolment was the week and half after anyway and to take in results slip then and make final subject choices. As it happened Dd didn't need to do tat but I guess many do change subjects.

FWIW I wouldn't choose to be away for results day but many people do miss it.

It's A level results day for us next year and that is right in the middle of August. Makes holiday fortnight much tighter at the start!

Agree it's too individual.
DD already had 4 x A* before end of yr11; we were confident she'd get into 6th form.

DS1 joined the Army: so not bothered as long as he had 5xC+ which we could be quite confident about achieving.

DS2 will go to a college with low entry bar; I've no worries he'll make the hurdle.

I'm actually In Scotland.

I realise the OP was talking about GCSE but I didn't know the English system was SO different. That's all.
