Good Secondary schools in Croydon area

Hi. I am moving to south croydon in the summer with my 12 yo son who will be year 8 on returning after the summer break. I would really appreciate some good advice on the schools around the area -
I was thinking of the Harris Academy Purley, Thomas More Catholic School, Riddlesdown,Warlingham,Archbishop tensions or Woodcote.
Any thoughts or knowledge would be great 👍

My neice and nephew go to woodcote. they are doing really well there.

ClubNed · 11/06/2019 11:33

Riddlesdown and Wwodcote are good, I think.

Never visited Warlingham school myself, but an acquaintance teaches there and says she would be happy for her own kids to go there... not something she's thought about any other school she's worked in! So a high recommendation there.

Don't know anything about the others.

Also you may want to post this on one of the Mumsnet Local boards? You might reach more people who live in the area.

Opalyra · 11/06/2019 13:53

My two are happy and progressing well at Warlingham.

PecanWalnutElderberry · 11/06/2019 13:54

Our son is facially disfigured. We considered Croydon state schools but felt we couldn’t take the risk.

I know that several of the secondaries in the town gather in the town square regularly for punch ups involving 100+ children.

Pebbles2007 · 11/06/2019 14:03

Ok.. where do I find that??
Never been on here before I don’t know my way around Confused
Thanks

Sorry, never done it myself so I'm not sure! I know they definitely exist, though, because I've seen stuff from them. Maybe you go to your profile and select which area you live in (or will live in)?

ClubNed · 11/06/2019 14:28

Ok, on my phone if I go to Talk then a list of topics comes up. One of them is Local Talk. When I select that then it asks me to select an area or postcode.

Best of luck!

This seems to be the one for Croydon, but how you start a new thread on it I'm not quite sure.

@MNHQ could you help at all please?

Pebbles2007 · 11/06/2019 15:14

Thanks 👍

Riddlesdown, Warlingham, Tenisons and Woodcote are all good schools.

Titsywoo · 13/06/2019 13:22

Mine go to Warlingham and we're very happy with it. Riddlesdown is also very good. Tenisons has a good reputation as does Woodcote. Coombe Wood is a new school is South Croydon - most of my sons primary class went there and are really happy. It's currently being built so they are in cabins and there is only a year 7 but it will build up over the next 5 years and they are going to add a 6th form. Building work to be completed next year I believe. Good if your kids are sporty. Avoid Thomas Moore it is awful. Not keen on the Harris schools either.

We pulled out DC from Tenisons part way through year 8 due to 2 separate incidents with people having knives at school. They and DC2 are now at Riddlesdown and happy (they were happy at Tenison to be fair it's is that weren't). You have to check you would be in catchment though, it's hugely oversubscribed. Have you find somewhere to live yet, as they will dictate to an extent?

CWS above is year 7 only. I avoid all Harris like the plague but many from DC1S year went there and are happy. Think it will change as more SCroydon parents choose CWS though. Warlingham had been our second choice but we live too far away sadly.

There are many good schools around here, we are lucky.

Titsywoo · 13/06/2019 15:08

Cws is year 7 only now but obviously there will be year 8 next year when the ops dc will be starting

Chartreuser · 13/06/2019 16:05

Blush didn't notice the Sep part

Some good info about the area Inc schools in this thread too www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3608943-To-wonder-why-Croydon-Sutton-get-so-much-negativity

SoupDragon · 13/06/2019 16:14

Tensions is on a very cramped site isn't it?

You're going to be limited by which schools have a Y8 space though.

calpop · 14/06/2019 00:01

South Croydon is very, very different from Croydon central in terms of feel and schools. Croydon is inner city London, with its good and bad, basically and South Croydon is some degree of leafy suburbs.

Riddlesdown, Warlingham, Woodcote are all very good, sell regarded, sought after, schools, populated mainly by the middle classes. I really wouldn't worry too much about the quality of these schools (the Harris one dont have great reputation though). The issue as pp has said will be where has space for y8.
