Maths and Science Tutors/VAKS Tuition

Hello fellow Mumsnetters, I know I am asking a question probably for the upteenth time on this forum, but can anyone recommend a good maths and science tutor in or around the Bishops Stortford area? Both children are in year 8 at the moment, starting GCSE syllabus next year. Also any thoughts on VAKS tuition?

I am familiar with VAKS centers - they work there in small groups of 4-6 in a large open space room, each group is following a certain programme. It's mainly doing exercises from a range of books eg. Bond books, 11+ books, GCSE etc and having a teacher there to help you if you are stuck. It's not bad but I felt it lacked structure and consistency as one day you are doing x from the beginning of the book and the next day - they cover completely different topic from the end of the book. Also they will not be able to offer you a tailored programme as it's a group session. In terms of cost it can be the same as hiring a tutor at £30/hour for 1-2-1 lessons.

Thank you for the responses - we have tried Kumon in the past at primary level, I liked the structure, but I am now looking at tutoring that follows the GCSE syllabus. Thank you for the advice on VAKS and I am most definitely looking for structure and consistency and working with the children's school. I was thinking the same cost wise, I would be better getting an individual tutor that could possibly tutor both my children at the same time - it is so difficult to find a good tutor though as there are so many out there was hoping for a recommendation if anyone has found a good one.
