Hype backpack or any other backpack brand

DD will need a new backpack after Summer. She has a laptop bag at the moment which we parent like as it has a decent bag and she walks around 30-40 minutes one way.

DD complains that she needs a smaller bag but unfortunately she is a bit of a squirrel and stuff ends in her bag despite constant checks (i am sure pens do multiply on their own).

Her school only allows backpacks until Y10 so the question is what is a good brand.

She says several of the girls have hype bags. She has as a minimum 5 workbooks (A4), two pencil cases, two paperbacks (English lit and a libary book) and a small cosmetic purse.

Hype would fit that in.. or any one from Jd that she likes

Hairyheadphones · 18/05/2019 17:25

My DD2 had a hype backpack for two years, would probably have lasted longer but she fancied a change and got a Vans bag instead - they also also last really well.

fairweathercyclist · 18/05/2019 17:40

Missing the point of thread (I'd say Hype or Superdry are good brands) but what do they use from year 10 if they are not allowed rucksacks anymore?

Juicyfrooty · 18/05/2019 17:43

Keep a look out on hypes own website they often have lots of the bags reduced to £15, some even less.

JuniperBeer · 18/05/2019 17:44

@fairweathcyclist I think OP means that the rules is that younger students are only allowed back packs, and not one shoulder or hand bag type bags. Older students after year ten will still be allowed back packs but they will also be allowed handbags etc!

JuniperBeer · 18/05/2019 17:45

@fairweathercyclist I meant!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 18/05/2019 17:58

Hype will be good, plenty of room. However ds,had one in year 7 after ‘changing his mind’ over his Northface. It lasted 3 months, holes in the corners. HOWEVER I believe this was from slinging it on the floor etc. Anyway he went back to Northface and still has one in year 9. He’s actually using his year 8 bag because it was pristine and he said he enter to keep it (thankfully!).

reluctantbrit · 18/05/2019 18:02

Fairweathercyclist, Y10 and 11 are allowed shoulder handbag type of bags.

Thanks for the help, will let Dd have a look. I don’t want to spend a fortune and pay for another bag when she changes her mind about fashion. Luckily her birthday is in July, so non-essential replacements are gifts.

Hype backpacks are cheaper on ebay and good quality but vans are also good and worth the price tag

Pppppppp1234 · 18/05/2019 18:13

You can pick them up for about £20/30 so not a bad price

MyNewBearTotoro · 18/05/2019 18:15

I’m shocked that a school would say shoulder bags only considering how much worse these are for backs. Much better to have the weight distributed in a rucksack than one sided as a shoulder bag. Especially if students are walking fairly long distances carrying a load of text books. Seems such an unnecessary rule.

RedSkyLastNight · 18/05/2019 18:27

I don't think the school is saying shoulder bags only. More that younger DC can only have backpacks, but older DC can either have backpacks or other types of bag instead.

reluctantbrit · 18/05/2019 19:48

The rules are Y7-9 backpack only
Y10 and 11 - choice of bags

The head is very keen on decent bags and sees the massive handbag ones are not healthy for still developing bodies, I assume she hopes if the girls are used to back packs they are not so ken to swap.

Dd has had a hype one twice she is year 8 they seem popular. It gets filfthy and has washed ok, apparently people walk on them
In the cloakroom.

cornflakemilk · 18/05/2019 22:14

Eastpak/Herschel?

ImTheCaddy · 18/05/2019 23:56

DD carries ridiculous amounts to school and has a Fjallraven Kanken. She does have the shoulder pads though.

She likes that it opens right up so it's easy to pack and find things.

Expensive though

reluctantbrit · 19/05/2019 08:07

Eastpack is too boring and Fjallraven too ugly

OP posts:
KittyMcKitty · 19/05/2019 08:54

Dd has had Hype bags before. She now has a Fjallraven Kanken (not with the padding on straps) which she loves - they are very much the “in” bag for girls at her school.

Rockbird · 19/05/2019 09:04

I see loads of Kankens coming down the hill from the school DD1 is headed to. She has chosen a similar backpack to a Hype one but the poor kid has no idea how much she's going to have to carry! Mind you, her primary school backpack seems to be packed with bricks... Hmm

chocsaregone · 19/05/2019 09:37

Hype bags good quality. I was worried it wouldn't be if enough and tried to encourage other makes that were a bit roomier eg superdry but DD adamant on hype.
It was a Xmas present from grandma so we let her choose the design from the actual hype website - loads on offer. Am glad we did as she loves it now and makes an effort not to overfill it. I can still barely lift it though!
I've seen hype bags in tkmaxx sometimes

LooseAtTheSeams · 19/05/2019 10:09

Herschel bags are really good - even DS2 hasn't managed to destroy his!

Lonecatwithkitten · 19/05/2019 10:13

The Hype back pack we had was good quality, but it took ages ( over 30 days to come) even though it was 'in stock'. Their customer service was shocking oh we had an unexpectedly large surge in orders - on a July as new year 7 are moving the senior school hardly a surprise.
The bag was good getting it was awful.

ShaggyRug · 19/05/2019 14:07

Victoria Secret Pink campus backpacks are fab and many girls at DD’s school use them. Soooo many pockets and room. But Pink don’t always stock them. They’re seasonal.

Fancyaruck · 19/05/2019 17:33

Vans bags last and last - plus if you can make it it a Vans outlet store (there's one in the shopping centre next to the NIA if you can get to Birmingham) they can be as cheap as a tenner.

twattymctwatterson · 19/05/2019 17:35

My local TKMaxx has Hype backpacks for 12.99 at the moment x
