Son weak in math

Hi everyone, my son is starting year 5 in September and he is quite weak in math. I am not sure I need to start with a tutor yet as I know he will need tutoring for the 11 plus eventually but I just want to know what I can do to give him a good foundation. Should I review his school math text book, Schofield and Simms, Bond books. Just not sure? Any suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated.

Khan academy or IXL apps are good for maths. Khan academy seems to be the better app for maths, plus it’s free. You get tutorials and practice questions and can work the questions out on an iPad rather than paper which my daughter thinks is a treat for some strange reason? Both apps also keep score which helps if your child is competitive. IXL gives certificates if that would help?
She’s still doing loads of maths, and she’s making loads of progress, but I also sit and explain it as long as I need to. 16hrs for division 😩 but now she’s working them out faster than me!

Having just taken twins through the 11 plus I am sorry but you saying your son is weak in maths...that's a big red flag for the 11 plus. You would be setting unrealistic goals for him to both pass the 11 plus and be happy in grammar school.
With my twins my son was strong in maths and while the school considered my daughter strong in maths she clearly found it harder than my son. Their 11 plus tutor said that it is easier for a child strong in maths but weaker in english to learn English for the 11 plus then it is for a child strong in English to learn maths for the 11 plus - and I found this to be true. My daughter passed the 11 plus - and in fact did much better than expected in her maths SAT test (120) - but it is obvious she still finds math harder than others at grammar school. I took her for an autism assessment and while the result was she is not autistic - we were given results on her maths ability which was considered average. The specialist said she will always find maths and science harder and suggested I get her a tutor for these areas.

I agree, you need to start tutoring for 11+ at start of y5 at the very latest (this only gives just I've a year before they sit the exam) and if you are already identifying has m as weak in maths it's going to be an uphill struggle.

Good point he is very strong on English and I need to get his math to the right level. Will have to get a tutor.

Just shows what a pile of shit the grammar school system is.
It does not seem to allow for a child with a spikey profile.
