Hello,
Please could anyone tell me about good family areas to live around Heckmondwike grammar school. I am looking for houses around the school as my DS has been offered a place there but everyone keeps on saying areas around are not good and further you move transport is a issue. Anyone has idea how to contact other parents who already have children in school and commute to school from ares like Wakefield or Huddersfield.
Thank you.

I have friends with children at Heckmondwicke

I don't want to say exactly where I live but we are around 5 miles away.

The parents use a mixture of shared taxis arranged when the children are in primary school or they use public transport. The shared taxi can be problematic when there are after school activities as not all children will attend. Therefore there is a parent or two who collect and pick up the children after the activity and drop them home. But you have already laid out the cost of the taxi.

The parents haven't moved house because their younger siblings may not get in (some definitely won't) and so they will go to the local secondary school that the primary school feeds into. Or they like where they are and wish to stay put.

Do you have any other children to consider? Do you work? Are you flexible enough work wise to be able to do school pick up when needed? Look at public transport as the ultimate back up.

Drop off is relatively straight forward because that is the same time every day, pick up is the more difficult one if you child plays sports, does drama or a musical instrument.

Congratulations on your DS getting a place at the school. I suggest you look at the public transport map www.heckgrammar.co.uk/admissions/travel/ if you want some flexibility. There is a terminus nearby. The immediate area wouldn’t’t get estate agents’ hearts pounding but Mirfield, Liversedge and Roberttown seem popular. The school is also asking current parents if they would consider using a private bus service so there’s scope for improvements.
