Hi, My DS is choosing options in Year 8 and will do the usual core subjects- Maths, English*2, Double Science and is thinking about the following options, he is not sure what he wants to do at the moment so trying to keep options broad, what would you say about the choices below.

French, RE, Film Studies and Music Technology
French, Geography, RE and Film studies

He has also thought about Drama as he enjoys doing the Lighting for productions and the teacher has said this is covered. The other one he has considered is citizenship.

I'm not too sure about Music Technology as he does not does not play any musical instruments.

Any views on the above. Thanks

Drop film studies - waste of time - don't know any decent school who offer it at gcse

Does he get a chance to change his options, again in yrs 9 & 10? That's how dS's school does things.

What's important is that your son can find enthusiasm for what he chooses.

If he's considering going on to university

Geography
French
RE
Music Technology (you don't have to play but it helps)
Film Studies

in that order

For Progress 8 (won’t affect him but it willthe school league tables he will have to choose at least one out of French, Geography, History or Computer Science so out of his list of possibles that’s either French or Geography (or both)

Out of the others what does he enjoy the most. My Dd loved RE. Drama is a god option for communication & English skills and if he enjoys the tech side that’s great. It can involve a bit of extra curricular stuff.

I don’t think Citizenship is very well regarded. I don’t know the Music Tech syllabus but my Ds is currently looking into A level/Btec options and it seems to involve arranging/composing/using/producing tracks etc.
