Secondary school appeal

Hello please can I have some advice with regards to a secondary school appeal.
The school for which I am appealing for has sent me a form to complete and one of the fields says ‘Please state briefly why you are appealing against the decision by the Board of Governors not to admit your child to this school’
My question is do I need to put everything down which I will be saying in the actual appeal? Eg PAN, after school activities, language taught which is not taught at allocated school.

This year the school has increased its intake from 168 to196 and I have asked the school how many year 7 classes there will be in September and how many pupils in each of these classes. Also asked for the figures for previous years.

Good luck everyone.....this wonderful forum and the advice given helped me to win my child’s primary school appeal all those years agoand now it’s time for her to start secondary!

No, you don't. You can just put in a brief statement for now and send in your full case later.

Thank you for the advice prh47bridge.

I have received (The final Education Health and Care Plan) naming the allocated Secondary School for my child... I received my first choice my question is can I appeal for a Secondary School that rank lower on my list?

If you have an EHCP you aren't going through the normal admissions system. The school named on the EHCP should be the one you requested during the EHCP process. If you now want a different school you need to ask the LA to alter the EHCP.

I will get in touch with the LA (a.s.a.p) and request for the Secondary School on the EHCP to be changed to the preferred school... Thank you for the advice prh47bridge.

Please could somebody explain about net capacity and academy schools and how can a school be oversubscribed first its not at full capacity

PanelChair · 10/03/2019 10:00

Oversubscribed (in the everyday use of the word) just means more applicants than places. Most schools are oversubscribed because everyone applies for three or more schools.

There could be many reasons for not being at full capacity - do you know any more of the background?

kerrie1234 · 10/03/2019 10:23

No I haven’t been given those reasons as yet. Do you know if a child that has suffered domestic abuse, bullying at a previous school thus all causing anxiety issues meaning that a child needs to stay with current friendship groups will be highly considered by the panel along with various support letters from professionals working with that child

PanelChair · 10/03/2019 10:35

This sounds like a complex situation and I suggest you start your own thread.

Some - but not all - schools have an exceptional social and medical need category. The bar is set quite high. You have to demonstrate that the child’s needs are such that only the preferred school can meet them and you have to provide evidence from independent professionals to say that in their opinion the child will be disadvantaged if they don’t attend this school.

Thank you
