I live in hampstesd and my son is 9 and in year 4 ! Eldest in class so has a few years yet..
However I want to get this right ...
And start looking now .
Private school is not going to happen for me .. so I have to look elsewhere..
I don't mind travelling out a bit if I can get him in! He wants to go to a mixed school also but I know there is not much choice !
He needs pastoral support too.
Please help

Depending on whereabouts in Hampstead you are, you could consider the Barnet schools? Otherwise in Camden you have Hampstead or Acland Burghley, again according to which side of the Heath you're on as both have catchments of a mile or less at the moment. Have you looked at William Ellis? Single sex, but quite small for a secondary. Haverstock is rumoured to be turning around, with a new Head in place, and it could be that's well in hand by the time your son comes to transfer to secondary. Where do boys from his primary school usually go?

If you're CofE, SMSJ in Hendon is very popular, Catholic I believe Bishop Douglass is well-regarded but I don't know about their admissions criteria. Jewish kids have JFS (lots of kids near me going there this year) or JCoSS.

Does that get you started? There is no substitute for visiting them yourself but open days/evenings take place in the autumn term so you'll have to wait. Go this year when your son is year 5 and again a year later when you actually have to make the application.
