Offer Day - for those on catchment borders/bulge class areas

Crouchendmumoftwo · 25/02/2019 13:06

I thought I would start a thread for parents specifically on the outside and edges of school catchments and in bulge classes as I think this is a specific issue for offer day.

I'm 0.5 away from my locals school and it didn't budge from 0.47 into September. I'm facing a very long wait into 2020 possible or attending a school very far away in an area we don't live in. Who knows!

Is this bulge year bigger than last years one? There is one next too - I think that one is slightly smaller.

I wondered how many other parents are in the same position? 2 years ago we would have got into our local school.

@BitchPeas if you know of additional (bulge) classes in year 6 at primaries in your area

Nomorerainplease · 01/03/2019 00:15

Have a look on the council website. Ours is out. We were on border but thankfully got a place.
Good luck all

Crouchendmumoftwo · 01/03/2019 00:24

Thanks @Zinnia, I love your analysis. Such a long wait. Let me know how you get on tomorrow. I hope you get what you want.

We got 3rd place our official catchment school. Disappointed so will be going on waiting lists but fear we will be too far down to get into preferred schools. It is a good school but it’s not the absolute best in the town. 😭

BHStowel · 01/03/2019 08:45

Yes thank you Zinnia, good points, well made.

Here’s hoping for the best for everyone.

BoringPerson · 01/03/2019 08:49

.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 09:27

So sorry to hear that @Claracracksthenut - will your LA tell you whereabouts you are on the waiting list before 15th?

Claracracksthenut · 01/03/2019 09:42

Email says waiting list will be established on 4th March. We got our catchment school and it is a good school but I had to send DS to school in tears today. It’s a very snobby town and the school he got is seen as the weaker if 3. Actually we are talking 3% in results and it’s 2nd best standard 8. We are not talking a bad school but it’s not the one we wanted.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 10:16

Your poor DS... lucky you having such strong choices in your area though! Presumably he won't be the only one with that school as an allocation? Will he have friends going? Might there be a lot of movement on the waiting list? Sounds like he will need lots of positive affirmation from you but must be awful seeing him so upset Flowers

crummyusername · 01/03/2019 10:19

How do you find out what time of day the offers come out? (Haringey here)

myrtleWilson · 01/03/2019 10:20

London is 5pm on website and emails sent through the evening

crummyusername · 01/03/2019 10:34

thanks myrtle, that's a long time to wait

ElenadeClermont · 01/03/2019 14:55

We got our 2nd choice and also an offer from a private school. We liked 2nd choice, but the private school is in a different league. No more lattes for me.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 15:41

Glad you had an easy choice Eleanade.

I am currently trying not to refresh the admissions site every 5 mins in case they put the pan-London offers up early (spoiler alert: they haven't)

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 17:05

Oh my god we got the lottery school we really weren't expecting that's miles away (3rd choice but a complete punt). Have some serious thinking to do about which waiting lists we want to stay on! So was not expecting that.

BrimfulOfChocolate · 01/03/2019 17:11

As expected we got 2nd choice. I am a little bit deflated, I think I was hoping for a miracle, but he seems happy. I still want to see where we are on the waiting list!

(Pan-London/Surrey now available if you log in)

Crouchendmumoftwo · 01/03/2019 17:15

We got our last choice 5th - gutted.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 17:33

Oh Crouch I am sorry... presumably you live closest to No.1 though (this is the school you're 0.5 miles but still out of catchment for, I think?) - hold your nerve, everybody but everybody says the waiting lists move all the time between now and the summer.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 17:38

So the pan-London board has put out its annual press release - actually only a 3% increase in applications which is a smaller one than the last two years (surprising).

BHStowel · 01/03/2019 18:32

I’m sorry too Crouch.

BHStowel · 01/03/2019 18:33

Oh, congratulations Zinnia? It sounds like a congratulations even though it’s 3rd choice?

Crouchendmumoftwo · 01/03/2019 18:36

Thanks @Zinnia and @BHStowel - the catchment didnt move last year in Sept it was 0.47 and this is a bigger bulge year do I dont hold out much hope. We will make the best of what we have. Great Zinnia you have something you feel good about too xx

4th choice here (2nd realistic one) so now the long wait to Monday morning phone calls to get a sense of waiting lists begins... same neck of the woods as you, crouchendmumoftwo...

ElenadeClermont · 01/03/2019 22:43

This is shocking:

Dad of two, Dale Kenvyn said he was shocked to discover his daughter Drew was one of 100 youngsters to miss out when Middlesbrough Council broke the news on Friday that the town’s secondary schools were completely full as a result of 'unprecedented demand'.

“We’ve been informed today that they’re not going to give us any school,” said the 30-year-old.

Zinnia · 01/03/2019 23:45

Oh that story is grim... thanks @BHStowel @Crouchendmumoftwo, I feel a bit weird as was not expecting to get that school at all, but now finding out loads of people round here who put it first choice haven't got it. So we are clearly really lucky. I shall still be hanging about on the waiting list for our first choice though!
