Harrogate Grammar School: intake radius

I've read the HGS admissions info which says that 79% of catchment-allocated places go to Harrogate town residents. Does anybody know how close you have to be to the school to realistically stand a chance of getting a place though?

Our first child isn't due to start secondary school until 2026(!) but once we buy a place, we won't be able to afford to move again for a long time. We've got to get it right first time, so any advice would be much appreciated!

Each year is slightly different but less half a mile should do it. Usually one year St Aidens is over subscribed and Grammar fine and the following year vice versa. There are no bad schools in Harrogate - just down to individual preference really.

Thanks estherfrewen Smile Just to make sure I've understood properly -- do you mean we'd need to live within 0.5 miles of HGS to stand a solid chance? That is a much smaller radius than I'd hoped for but it's handy to know!

Esther, sorry but not true.
Harrogate Grammar is over subscribed every year, usually it is the most over subscribed school in North Yorkshire. Aidens is also an excellent school, I am most certainly not knocking it, and I suspect it is heavily over subscribed every year as well.
OP if it really is a no move situation then I would go for 0.5-0.75 mile radius, though my gut feeling is mostly within a mile is fine.

Hmm well friend was governor at Hgte Grammer and that’s what I was told. Mine don’t go to either.

Thank you, Rosieposy4. This is sort of what I'd suspected. I'm going to be watching Rightmove like a hawk for the next year or so!
