Hi all

Do we know how (approx.) many girls are invited back to sit Tiffin Girls 2nd stage exam?

Not long till 1st of March and feeling nervous...

I don't know for sure but heard it was approx 450.

Nervous here too! DD really wants to go and we live on the doorstep.

What are your other options Niksy2015?

FlumePlume · 12/02/2019 20:09

Also waiting for Tiffin here, but with indie result coming on Friday as well.

Niksy2015 · 13/02/2019 06:35

Thanks hippospot - that's useful to know.
My DD also passed the Sutton grammar schools but her score is very borderline and unlikely to get allocation on 1st March as we are ooc. So really hoping that its good news for Tiffins. We didn't prepare for any independent schools.

How about you?

Flume - I have followed your other Tiffins post on here so- all the best to your DD.

Hope all our DDs get the school of their choice. I just can't help thinking about it everyday now. I think the final week after halt-term will probably feel like the longest week ever.

Our second choice is a local state school - it's very good so no real reason to worry, it's just that DD really did love Tiffin and I think it would be a good fit for her.

Good luck to you both.

I had a look at the Kingston admissions brochure and these are the 2018 and 2017 figures for Tiffin Girls. The first figure is 2018 and the second is 2017.

Candidates tested at stage one
1,427, 1,242
Candidates tested at stage two
510, 448
Number of places available (published admission number)
180, 180
Number of appeals heard
15, 3
Number of successful appeals
1, 0

Thanks so much for sharing this data...

I suspect that the figures for 2019 intake will be considerably higher given the massive queues on the exam day!

We are not feeling very hopeful but would like the wait to be over. DD may have done OK in the English papers but left out lots of questions in the Maths which I think will put her out of the running. Does anyone know what the weighting for the various bits of part 2 is? i.e. is the Maths equal to the two other papers.

Jimjam68 · 14/02/2019 10:24

It will be 50% Maths 50% English won’t it? Only the stage 2 papers count. My DD also didn’t complete the maths paper, but I suspect quite a few didn’t?

Jimjam68 · 14/02/2019 10:26

Just checked and its 60% English and 40% maths.

Niksy2015 · 14/02/2019 10:59

Yes you are right jimjam as there was English comprehension and creative writing element so a slightly higher weighting than maths.
My DD didn't manage to complete the maths either - we are trying desperately to be hopeful buts difficult especially as its only 180 places out of potentially 500 girls would sat 2nd stage.

OP posts:
Myfirstcalendar · 14/02/2019 11:53

I wonder how many of the 500 girls will definitely accept a place? I have one friend whose daughter sat stage 2 who will almost certainly take up a private place but I suspect the numbers are small. Think about 15 or so get in on the waiting list and I am sure they do not over offer. I actually like our other options but just want to know results so I can be settled for next year!

hippospot · 14/02/2019 11:58

My DD also didn't complete the maths paper. But her strengths are definitely in creative writing and comprehension so I haven't given up hope of her getting in.

littlemisslucky2 · 14/02/2019 12:04

Priority is also given to SEN, pupil premium and inner area children. We’re in the designated area so will be pushed further down the list if my dd scores high enough. Of those 450 or so taking the stage 2 I’m guessing some of them are out of area and won’t qualify for a place?

hippospot · 14/02/2019 12:08

I'd dearly love to know how many doing the stage 2 live in the inner area (as we do). I think there are 60 places for the inner area - is that right?

Myfirstcalendar · 14/02/2019 12:08

We are the same here in terms of strengths but I think she left out about 15 questions not one or two (!) so I think in our case it is probably just too much for us to be very optimistic. Am still crossing all our fingers and toes. Good luck to everybody else and wish we could fast forward 2 weeks.

littlemisslucky2 · 14/02/2019 12:12

Yes hippospot - 60 places prioritised for inner area. A girl near me (designated area) got a place via waiting list a couple of years ago so it does move. I’m not holding out much hope for us.

MeMeMeYou · 14/02/2019 21:37

We too are designated area and Dd didn’t finish maths. Annoyingly we’d be inner area for tiffin boys - doesn’t seem right living in Kingston borough. DD liked tiffin girls best of all but I think she actually was a bit over tests by tiffin test 2. She seemed more focused at nonsuch and score seemed quite good. Who knows. Nerve wracking!
