11 + reviews with marks. 4 of a mark under.. Were you successful?

Review.. Ie the paper one not an appeal...

Dd was quarter of a mark under pass of 121.

We went to review, our head doesn't give support statement but we were given a the 1:1 grammer suitability recommendation.

Anyone been successful, my supporting letter was a bit crap really as there was nothing much I could say.

It will depends if there are places available. There are dc at dd’s grammar who got under the pass mark in the 11 plus, but got a place on appeal.

How much was your dd tutored for it? Do you think she’ll cope?

OnTheHop · 03/02/2019 10:33

It is unrealistic to expect state school heads to engage unless you are in a full Grammar area.

OnTheHop · 03/02/2019 10:35

Sorry posted too soon.

It isn’t in their JD, they are putting themselves into a competitive arena that may pitch one pupil against another, they are tasked with working towards SATS levels as evidence of children’s learning and ability, not 11+.

I think the 11Plus Forum website has threads covering this. I'm fairly sure that if it goes to appeal, there is a good chance of getting a pass mark when it is so close. This isn't the same as HT review.

Have you appealed?

Snowmaggedon · 03/02/2019 18:33

She wasn't tutored. Having got such a close mark I'm gutted of course.

We have done the review which has space for The head to write in support but she won't. Not doing anything except writing in support of my dd which she has done on yearly report.

Chocolate... What makes you think being so close is promising Grin

Have you put the Grammar on your CAF and have you appealed?

Go onto the 11+ forum and do a search of missed pass mark by 0.4% and you will find threads dedicated to this issue, along with those that have statistical analysis of HT reviews being positive and appeals being positive with varying different marks below the pass mark.

There is loads of info on the Forum from experts of many years. I've just read some of it and can't recall the exact details, but know info really useful for you is out there. There is also advice about HT reviews and appeals etc and things you can do to give your DC the very best chance of the outcome you want.

PettsWoodParadise · 03/02/2019 18:39

The appeals section on the elevenplusforum that chocolatewbat mentions is dotted with success stories and also of those who tried, didn’t get the grammar but their DCs still thrived at their allocated school - the common factor being a parent who is invested with their child’s happiness and future. www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/11plus/viewforum.php?f=35

Chocolate thanks. I have dipped in and out of 11+ forum but find the interface hard to use.

Yes absolutely Pett, totally agree. I'm sure she will do just as well at our other choices but as it's growing close to when they tell us I'm still feeling nervous.

No we didn't put the specific school on form.

There are two avenues of appeal. One is a paper exercise... The review. Which is what we have chosen. The other is an appeal in person. We are not going down that route.

Surely there’s nothing to be lost from getting the test re-marked. (Is that what the paper based review is?)

And she may yet get a waiting list place. Is over-subscription on test score, or distance? Did she not make the declared pass grade, or is it done on ranked scores?

Holidayshopping · 04/02/2019 07:55

What is a paper based review? How does it work?

ChocolateWombat · 04/02/2019 08:30

121 will be a standardised pass mark. It won't be a ranking thing once you've got over 121, but most likely then based on location. There won't be re-marks as its all done of multiple choice. The score is simply not a pass mark. The review gives a chance to put a case for a student being better than they performed in the test and wih a mark so close, it is more likely to succeed. There are no waiting lists in terms of those not have a 'selective suitable' mark - only for those who are deemed selectively suitable and who don't get a place in 1 March.
I think I'm right about appeal, but appeal only happens after the March allocations of places and you can only appeal for a school you've put on CAF.

Snowmaggedon · 04/02/2019 21:59

Yes that's how I understand it chocolate.

We are not bothering with the appeal in person we are just going for review.
Thanks for positive comments.
Life would be easier if she fails review, but if she does get in, it's one of the better grammars so...
