For me, that the numbers applying are crazy and the sheer odds stacked against getting in.

“It’s just one big Tinder”

Yes! Best to face up to that fact sooner rather than later. Realism gives us all the best chance of ending up somewhere we actually want to be. We all need to understand the underlying algorithms of our life paths.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 09:11

“We all need to understand the underlying algorithms of our life paths.”

At 10????

MariaNovella · 06/02/2019 09:13

At 10 you are a child and so you will largely depend upon your parents’ ability to understand the underlying algorithm. But any DC doing any sort of entrance process or test will have a good taste of algorithm universe Smile

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 09:19

So the algorithm is - if you are privileged you get more privilege. If you aren’t-tough.

Dione Well said.

Person A does the local history stuff at half term.
Person B goes to Alton Towers.
Person A takes time to do the homework with their child every night.
Person B sticks on the tv or gives the child an iPad.
Person A buys books and educational materials for use at home.
Person B buys game apps.

Who gets into the selective school? Who knows, but Person A has tried their best and has instilled a work ethic and an appreciation of knowledge and of learning. Useful and important tools. Person B is either lucky (inc naturally talented) or fails but doesn’t have the tools.

At 10????

Yes at 10. It’s inbuilt. Kids know it at 4. They tell on each other and like to win.

Christ deadman! You have no business stooping to personalised abuse.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 09:57

Deadmansdrop-if it’s all about innate intelligence, why is the socio-economic make up of grammar schools and secondary modern schools in the same catchment so strikingly different?

deadmansdrop · 06/02/2019 10:08

Hahhahaha! The same few have been abusive throughout the thread, telling us we don’t give a damn about others if our kids are brighter than theirs, just to try and cover for their kids not getting in.

And I’ve never said it’s all about innate intelligence, there you go again deflecting from the fact some think you failed as a parent.

Fucksake. Call a spade a spade.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 10:10

Fair enough, deadmansdrop. Happy to discuss further if you like. Feel free to report any “abuse” i’ve posted. I’d prefer yours to be left up -it’s quite educational in its way!

deadmansdrop · 06/02/2019 10:11

It’s always someone else’s fault with some isn’t it? Blame the system, blame the teachers, blame the other parents, blame the kids.

We didn’t blame anyone, just got in with it and succeeded.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 10:12

Also happy to call a spade a spade. People like grammar schools because they think it’ll keep their children away from the plebs.

borntobequiet · 06/02/2019 10:15

Dear me.

4up4down · 06/02/2019 10:22

People like grammar schools because they think it’ll keep their children away from the plebs.

😂

OK then.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 10:24

Sorry- missed out “some”. Some people......

So agree with borntobequiet. Look around us now . . Everywhere the end results of years of I’m (or My Kids are) all right Jack, stuff everyone else’s. More respect and communication between people of contrasting backgrounds and abilities is what this country needs so much . . . And does anyone think a highly selective education system is the best way to foster it?.

Greentent · 06/02/2019 11:02

Also agree. At our local comp we have the children of doctors, uni profs, journalists, head teachers and teachers, etc. We also have traveller children, children in care and SEN kids. We have kids getting 4A* at A Level and going on to Oxbridge.

deadmansdrop · 06/02/2019 11:04

You want to blame schools for how you bring up your kids now? Are you seriously saying they don’t speak to contrasting abilities because there aren’t any in the school?!

Seriously?

Do you volunteer anywhere with your children? Do they help with children of contrastive abilities? Do you seek out people from other backgrounds? We do all of these things.

Why are you saying schools should parent your children in these aspects? It’s just excuses, grasping at straws to try and bring down a system you don’t like but you are making yourself look fools now.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 11:20

Deadmansdrop-I don’t think you’re making sense....

deadmansdrop · 06/02/2019 11:25

Then there is no hope for you. You just want to blame blame blame.

Good luck! 😁

Greentent · 06/02/2019 11:27

Deadmansdrop - ask all your questions to the kids in local authority care...

deadmansdrop · 06/02/2019 11:37

Fucksake.

The drama of it all.

No wonder the kids aren’t succeeding. The chips on their shoulders must be so big they can’t see where they are going because people like you greentent are treating them as second best.

BertrandRussell · 06/02/2019 11:40

Do you want to discuss or do you just want to shout? Feel free to shout at me- i’m fine with that. Discussion is more interesting, though.
