Given the first, why the second?

Before you hand over good money to a tutor, has your son spoken to the teachers concerned to let them know that he feels 'he isn't doing as well as he thinks he could / should be? Does the school offer lunchtime or after school drop-in sessions that he could be attending, or has he already tried them and found that they haven't helped?

He does all he can, he is not some backward, but needs to improve
