I don't live in Stretford, but that's Trafford Council. They have a list of schools online ...

Are you looking at primary or secondary?

ladybirdpoppy · 11/01/2019 22:56

Long day.. Realised this post is in secondary! I live in nr Stretford, when will you be moving?

This may or may not be an issue for you but Trafford is one of the few boroughs in England which still has state grammars. So primary school children of your DS's age sit the 11 plus exam. It effectively means that Trafford doesn't have any comprehensives - secondary schools are essentially either grammars or secondary moderns (I went to Stretford Grammar).

Ok , so tbh the non grammar options are imho not brilliant. Stretford HIgh, Lostock, St Anthony’s ( for Catholic). There’s an all boys school further afield ( Wellacre).

Hi, if you are going down the 11+ route, stretford grammar takes kids from M32 area if they met the pass mark as priority. The competition is fierce though, around 10 kids chasing 1 place, many have tutors or attend a tuition centre as primary schools don't not teach any 11+. Stretford and Urmston grammar seem to take a wider catchment up to 4 miles out compared to Sale. Depending on your faith, there is BTH in Altrincham (Catholic college with around 300 intake each year) I have seen lots of pupils getting on and off at stretford tram stop and also Sale High School.

Don't send him to Stretford high. I did my pgce there. It was shocking.

bananapeanutbutterandtoast · 18/01/2019 22:21

Altrincham Grammar School for Boys is a very good choice as is Sale Grammar. Not bad to get to on the tram but not sure how easy to get into living in Stretford. Sale is closer.
Stretford High is appalling. I would avoid it.

If he’s currently 10 I think you’ve missed the 11+ window anyway?

SwayingInTime · 21/01/2019 22:04

If he's football mad and you have time, ie. he's a year 5 age 10, move as close as possible to Ashton on Mersey school, the man United academy kids go there and it's a very sports focused school.
