Hi there, I have a son who is a diagnosed dyslexic currently in year 8. He has learned various techniques and strategies to help him read but has trouble with his writing and spelling. We have already arranged with the school for him to use a laptop for note taking in lessons and for homework. This has been a great enabler for him. Where w still have problems is with phonics decoding and spelling. We have started 'Toe to Toe' which is ok at home but we also interested if anyone knows of, or has used any software which can also help with the phonics decoding and spelling.
Many thanks
V

It could be that your DS has poor phonic awareness and trying to learn via phonics won’t work. There are other methods out there - the more ‘old fashioned’ learn words/endings etc...
Also, understanding the roots of words may help with spellings.

I’d be concerned with trying to use a laptop to take notes in class. For a child with dyslexia, this can be very hard.
Dyslexia is about organisational and memory retention. You’d have to have excellent touch typing, combined with good listening and memory retention to make proper use of the laptop. These are the very things dyslexics have problems with.

I’d ask all class teachers to give out handouts before the lesson - that way DS can read before class and be familiar with ideas/specific words.
Dictaphone during lesson - then either by typing or using Dragon re-write class notes in evening when still fresh in mind.

Many thanks for this and will look into whether we can arrange handouts. As for the laptop use, he is finding very good and it is meaning he can for the first time actually read notes he has made :)
