How do you know if your dc is doing well?

Dc has been doing tests at school for the last couple of weeks and is now getting some results back. One test he got around 87% correct and I have no idea if this is an ok score or not? Dc is in the top groups and I’m wondering if 87% is too low? Haven’t had any parents evening or report so I don’t really have a clue of what is expected or what is good?

You need to ask the school. There is absolutely no way of telling.
Better yet, ask DC to find out - there is no way that the teachers have just said "you got 87%" with no context as to whether it was good or bad.

I second asking your DC or the school. I'm a teacher and when I give results back I would say to a class "In this class the highest mark was 94 and the lowest was 36", obviously using the actual results of the class. So while they won't know exactly what position in the class they are, they know roughly how well they are doing.

Nobody here can tell you if that's good or not, because we don't know what the tests are or how hard they are. In some schools 87% is very, very good because the tests are really hard. In other schools the tests are easier so 87% would be near the bottom of top set or top of set 2.

Depends on the purpose of the test really. DS occasionally has tests where the teacher expects them to get full marks or almost full marks - the test is more of a spot check that no one is hopelessly floundering.

If OP's DC's school sets, then there's also the possibility that 87% is good, but poor by the standards of the set he's in.

The child with 36% must have that sinking feeling of being crap.

Our school posts test results online and provides an interim report every term on a Parent Portal - it tells you test scores and where your child is tracking against expectations. It also provides feedback on attitude, effort, homework etc. Parents evenings are only once a year so it's really useful.

DD2 has a lot of mocks results to come - her class were told earlier this weeks that the grades for English lit ranged from a 1 to an 8 and that was all.

I give out the highest score for the group, and the average score for the group.

I don’t give out the bottom score publicly, but if a pupil privately asks if theirs was the lowest I will confirm or deny.

We know nothing about how our children are doing . My Ds is year 7. I know his cat scores because Senco sent them me.
But portal says nothing.
We have reports mid December so am hoping something appears then

Ds recently had some tests and they are told what the boundaries were for grades in some classes, maths was >84% for an A. Or they were told in modern studies as long as they got over 70% it was a good mark. This is all word of mouth from ds, we don't have a parents evening until Feb.

Depends how difficult the test was!
