Gutted DS got an awful result in Maths CAT test

Perhaps this is just a worry post. I do have a tendency to overthink.

DS did ok in his SATS in Y6. Got 107. Not too bad. Since the start of Y7 he's been putting in a big effort in Maths. Getting good feedback in lessons and trying really hard in puzzle-type homework.

So today he was gutted to find out his Maths test score (which must have been CAT) was 17/50

So, I know next term they will be settled and he'll be in a lower set. I'm just panicking I guess that his confidence is shot and he'll not be able to work his way out of it.
There is movement between sets but I'm worried he'll be too far behind. I'm currently thinking about a Maths tutor? I've never done that before.

Has anyone been through this and their Dc worked their way up? DS has been feeling really good about school and settled well so far, but feeling a bit crap right now.

Setted not settled.

You seem to be jumping the gun a bit here. Why do you think it was a CAT test? They’re not out of 50. Were they told they’d be setted based on this test only?

And what did everyone else get?

Trampire · 23/10/2018 18:39

I assumed they were a CAT test. I didn't know they weren't out if 50. I know they get setted soon after they start and we're nearly up to half term. So yes, maybe I am jumping the gun a bit?

My dd is in Y9 and was set not long after a test in Y7 so I assumed it was the same thing.

Ds says everyone else got high 30's and 40's but I'm not sure that's reliable.

He might bounce back from it but if he doesn't, consider a tutor. I had one once a week when I was 16 and I don't think I would have passed my GCSEs otherwise!

That does sound like a CATS test at all.

Doesn’t I mean, doesn’t sound like CATS!
