My DD year 9 has just begun her English Lit syllabus as in her school they take the GCSE in year 10. She submitted the attached first piece of work on Jekyll and Hyde (hope it's legible) and on the basis of this work has been given a predicted GCSE grade of 2. This grade won't be reviewed until next term. She's a bright top set student and is horrified, as am I. The teacher has told her that for a higher grade she should have used the structure he has taught (Peeclaw) and include the quotes he had already highlighted for inclusion. She resents being spoonfed in this way and discouraged from expressing any original ideas about the text. So my questions are: is this a normal way for English GCSE to be taught now? do you agree she is possibly headed for a grade 2? Should I get a tutor now or is it better to wait/ speak to the school?
