Year 7 star reading test and sats results

If a child achieved just over 110 in the ks2 reading sats, what do secondary schools expect them to achieve in the star reading test (what age should they be) at the beginning of the year 7?

11-12 years I’d guess. Why do you ask?

As Ghoul said - I would say 11-12 spending on age. 110 is slightly above the 100 average. It does depend though as spelling and reading are different skills - a good reader is not necessarily a good speller and vice versa. This is why we do the yeasts in year 7.

I'm asking because my dc only achieved 9 months above real age and I was expecting a bit better to be honest and was wondering how this low reading age will affect my dc.

Does he read at home? What kind of texts is he looking at?

Well 9 months ahead is well above average. I think that sounds like a good score. I would think the school would have a recommended reading list (or could direct you to one) and you could improve the quality of his reading which would help with spelling. My DS is a big reader but sometimes the quality of what he reads could be better!

Yes dc reads at home, at the moment one of the harry potter books. Only reads because dc has to and I push for it. When dc was younger dc had a real love for reading and used to read loads and always worked well above the expected level at school, now dc no longer seems that interested in reading anymore. I think the main problem is dc can be a bit a lazy and sometimes prefers to guess the answers rather than look for the answers.

dc achieved full marks on grammar ks2 sats, so no problems on grammar or spelling.

That all seems pretty standard, OP, does he enjoy HP? I’ve recommended Liam Scott books by Andy McNabb to quite a few of my year 7’s.

It may be that the books he is reading are not challenging him to learn new vocab, writing styles etc.. you might need to think outside the box a bit for different books. My yr7 ds is into biographies at the moment, so we are going with that!

Average for reading in 2018 was 105.

I think a score of 110+ means exceeding\higher attainment.

Your DC has a reading age above their age, albeit only 9 months so not sure why you think “this low reading age” will have an impact - it’s not low, it’s average. As for getting 110 in the KS2 SATS paper, that’s only just above the average score so your child isn’t that advanced - and I say that as a year 6 teacher.

dc didn't get 110, but it was bellow 115, I know that is not amazing but it's considered a high score and is above the expected level especially for a late summer born. I still think that dc reading age is pretty low

I'm well aware that is not massively above, but my question wasn't about that. I'm just asking what secondary school expect from pupils who achieve greater depth or a high score, as to me 9 months above real age isn't much.

I’m a year 6 teacher and yes the SATS score is above average but it’s not exceptional, it’s not indicating an outstanding/high achiever

but I never said dc score was exceptional...

but dc is a high achiever, always has been

My son got 108 in his reading SAT in y6. At the start of Year 7 his reading age was 14 years 3 months. He’s just started y8, I know they did the test again at the end of y7 but they didn’t share those results with parents.

That's why teachers here are telling you it's fine - they know that 9 months above average is just that. As pupils get older their reading age tends to rise disproportionally as their vocabulary increases. My Year 7 set range from 98-115 and have reading ages from 9-15+. Each child is different. Encourage your child to read and don't pressure them
