11+ waiting for results

Mumoftwinsandanother · 13/09/2018 14:46

Hi there

My twins have both taken the 11+ in Bucks today. Results come out on 13th October, I think. It could really go either way for both of them. My biggest fear is that one gets in and the other does not (really quite possible).
Saw that last year there was a thread from parents during the waiting period and I wondered if anyone wanted to take part in a hand holding thread this year (for any county). Obviously have to be very careful what I say to DTs so would be useful to vent here.

Anyone else in similar position?

Bucks results out later today. Good luck everyone!

Oh, today is the day for Glos.
Well don all you who have passed.

I was having a philosophical moment last night, and was thinking this, and I thought I'd share, especially for those who don't get the results they want:

It has been shown that kids who do well in life have high emotional intelligence as well as high IQ.
All our kids (I am assuming) come from families which are generally loving and stable and concerned with teaching them positive values, kindness, etc, so they should develop high emotional intelligence.
All our kids are also in the top 10/20% in terms of intelligence. Even if they don't pass, they, by the very fact they were able to be put in for the exam, are in that top percentage.
The single biggest factor in determining how well a child does in school, is how supportive the parents are. By going through this process and sitting here worrying, we have demonstrated that we are concerned and supportive. (or, as some on here have said, by considered schools and deciding not to go through the process because that is best for OUR child)

So, whichever school our children end up in, we should remember that they have all life's advantages stacked in their favour, and they are likely to succeed in life.

Obviously there will be exceptions, and life throws in curve balls when we least expect it, but right now, as I sit here biting my nails, I need to take a step back, and remember all of that.

for the PP who asked about selective v. superselective.
Go back and visit both school. Look at which one would be best for YOUR CHILD. Look at their interests, strengths, weaknesses and how the school addresses them. If you have the choice between 2 schools which are both academically good, then I would choose the school where he/she will be happiest. Happy children work harder and do better.

Waiting for Glos here too steppemum. I know there’s a couple of schools holding open evenings in the next couple of weeks before the CAF deadline, do you know if the others tend to offer something for the kids who have been ranked? I’d be keen to revisit IF we get the right results.

steppemum · 12/10/2018 10:14

they deliberately put the open evenings after results and before CAF, so that anyone who didn't get what they expected can come and make decisions.
They are open to all, year 5, year 6 etc.
For those that haven't got an open evening, you can always phone up and ask for a visit, most will do that.

On your result sheet they will tell you what they did last year wrt ranks, so
Your dc has passed, with a rank of 245, last year we took down to 350.
That way you have a really good idea if you will get a place.

Are you on the 11+ forum? The glos lot are quite nice!

Mimena · 12/10/2018 10:29

Thanks for that. I’m registered on the site, have only posted a few times asking daft questions this time last year, but will keep an eye out there later today!

Get Bucks results at 4pm today straight after school. Going to take twin 1 to a violin lesson straight after school and not open. Then will open letter with twin 2 on her own. Pick up twin 1 and open letter with her on her own. Bit complicated but I want to avoid them opening at same time and one passes and one fails and I don't know what to say and which one to speak to first. I am regretting having done this to them and feel very guilty about it.

I was reading Fount's comments and everyone's responses. I agree with you Fount re grammar schools, I just don't have the courage of my convictions in the way you do. All their friends were sitting the test (almost everyone in my town sits the test even though we are not in Bucks).
I don't agree with you re faith criteria. I am a governor of a faith school with faith admission criteria and a regular church attender and I wish I could get rid of the faith criteria (vicar argues that faith families should have access to a faith school as its the only place faith children feel comfortable expressing their religion and I agree it is tough to be religious these days as people openly mock your "fairy-tale"or make massive assumptions about your beliefs on other matters) However, to my mind (as someone said above) the faith criteria essentially prioritises middle-class families who are together enough to attend church and fill in the form, ask the vicar etc. As someone above said people with dysfunctional, chaotic lives are usually not able to do this and their children deserve a good school place just as much.

Mumoftwins good luck for later - that sound like a really good way of doing it with your twins. A nervous hour or so though!

Out of curiosity, as you’re not in Bucks but are sitting the Bucks test, how do you get the results? Our school gives the results in an envelope to the kids today but I presume it’s different if you’re not at a Bucks primary?

Mumoftwinsandanother · 12/10/2018 11:53

Thanks Sheba.
We are in the awkward position of being part of Herts but going to a Bucks primary school (so they get them at the end of the day in an envelope) and will go (if not grammar) to a Herts secondary. For the kids going to Herts' schools they get it sent through the post on Thursday 1st class so should have arrived today already.

crisscrosscranky · 12/10/2018 12:02

Thank you @steppemum you're absolutely right about our kids chances in life not being based on one test.

steppemum · 12/10/2018 12:07

Oh mumoftwins, tricky situation, sounds as if you have a good work around.

I really feel for those picking up results at end of school day.
Ours come to the house by email, so we can decide how and when to share.

Mimena, there is a thread under Glos on 11+ very similar to this one, with everyone biting their nails, but it will be busy today as we all get ours today.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 12/10/2018 12:58

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you mumoftwins (and everyone else). Sorry for derailing about Bennett, it’s not so much the religious criteria that annoys me but the way they implement it. If they had a catchment area with children of faith within that area at the top followed by other children next, then children of faith from outside the area it would be so much fairer (and there would be fewer buses clogging up the backroads in the mornings).

Anyway, it’s a moot point for me now as DD passed.

Exexexcel · 12/10/2018 13:09

It is definitely today for glos? Someone (in education) told us it was Monday! The letter from glos cc about secondary transfer helpfully says Monday 12th October... So is it Monday or the 12th?! Lol

steppemum · 12/10/2018 13:14

Today is the 12th!

yes today, starting around 3 pm, and results come in a trickle over the following hour or so. So apparent order to who gets first, or which school goes first. (one email from each school)

hibeat · 12/10/2018 13:15

Holding my breath for you all. Mum of twins I wish you the best outcome.

steppemum · 12/10/2018 13:16

Oh, sorry, just re -read, yes the 12th, not Monday. Today.

Exexexcel · 12/10/2018 13:25

Great, thanks steppe. Don't think I could do another weekend of waiting, another few hours seems bad enough!

Ari83 · 12/10/2018 13:48

Hertfordshire results come out on 17th October so we have more waiting to do!! I'm nervous now, tried not to think about it too much before!

Good luck OP!!

steppemum · 12/10/2018 15:07

So, very unfairly, one of the boys schools results in glo are out, but none of the others yet!

The school we want says 4 pm.

My stomach is churning.

Mumski45 · 12/10/2018 15:56

Fingers crossed for all the parents waiting for results today. I do hope you all get good news. I know how stressful it can be.

Mimena · 12/10/2018 16:15

Yay, DS has got the option of a place of all four schools we applied for - really pleased for him, but really not sure what we’re going to do!

BonfiresOfInsanity · 12/10/2018 16:29

DS passed! I’m so incredibly relieved and he is overjoyed to finally be going to the same school as his brother!

I hope everyone else gets the results they are hoping for. X

steppemum · 12/10/2018 16:30

Oh, dd is in!

SOOO relieved

Mimena · 12/10/2018 16:36

Brilliant steppemum! And well done to Bonfires’ DS too, so much more stressful I imagine with older siblings already there. This is my first time, and I have a y4 DS too...

steppemum · 12/10/2018 17:10

Mimena - yes dd is youngest of 3, older 2 at grammar, all cousins at grammar, it really felt the pressure was on her to do the same.

The stress of being the youngest.
