As the Tiffin deadline looms, is there a girls SW London grammars / indies thread yet?

I just realised that I need to get the Tiffin Girls form in ASAP, and wondered if anyone else is in the same position? I could do with company in this process!

We’re not yet decided but probably applying to Tiffin, WHS, SPGS, Sutton High and maybe one of PHS / Emanuel / KGS.

One of the schools mentioned to parents on the interview day that they would be open at the weekend so might be worth checking whether they can receive forms then rather than doing a Monday morning dash. Yes, the system is unfair to those on waiting lists as I doubt they will move much before the state options come out & the deadline of 4th March by which time you might have paid a deposit to another school. Also I believe you can find out where you are on TGS waiting list but not until the Monday.

@1ndig0 - that will be one busy kid!! So yes am preferring WHS over PHS so am hoping for that (is a walk not a bus and love the head) - but also my DS is loving KGS and we had a general interview there. And then my DH knows a sixth former from SHS who used to go to WHS and she says she much prefers the former!!! So all up in the air. The waitlist at PHS rules it out for me. Simply wont wait to accept somewhere else.

Bool · 04/02/2019 18:47

Yes is so supportive to have this thread and we all go through the process together Confused

winterishereithink · 04/02/2019 18:51

Just looked back at some emails- last year the WHS Registrar said she would definitely be contactable the weekend before that final offer acceptance day! There was loads of snow at the time so some schools were accepting emailed forms and bank transfers for the deposit!

Jimjam68 · 04/02/2019 19:50

1indigo, our Second Sight visit is on the 13th Feb so clearly they’ve allocated dates rather than give a choice. I’ve seen enough of WHS anyway, we dont need to revisit. Surbiton is clearly more of a “this is what we have to offer” rather than just a tour. Not clear what PHS are doing?

1ndig0 · 04/02/2019 20:25

It feels like a long wait now for the results on the 15th and now I’ve found out DD is in a singing competition that day and will be looking at me in the audience to gauge the news! I don’t want to put her off the performance if it’s not good news. Or the post might not even come before I have to leave. The whole school is worn out with all this. I was talking to a teacher today who said there is no way they can have any meaningful info from the interviews if hundreds of girls. Basically, they will take the top whatever number of performers in the exam and as long as the interviews / references are reasonable, then that’s it. So for Consortium schools and PHS and WHS by the sound of it too, hundreds of girls will have done interviews for nothing. Some before the exams and some after, whether they made the grade or not.

AnotherYearOfChaos · 04/02/2019 20:29

Had missed preallocated dates for revisit.
Off to check the letter.....
Well done to those with offers.
God luck to those still waiting.
And thanks to all for this thread!

FlumePlume · 05/02/2019 11:02

Thinking about it, there are lots of combinations of offers / no offer / waiting list that would mean very different decisions about whether to relinquish any offers before 4 March. I certainly don’t want to hold any places that I don’t have to, when they could go to someone on the waiting list. For us, the crunch date will be 15 Feb, when we will know about all the indies.

littlemiss You’re right that you don’t get the necessary info about Tiffin until the Monday - they only send out the marks (for those who haven’t got a place) that day, and those marks (combined with info about last year’s marks) will give a sense of whether there is the possibility of a place from the waiting list.

1ndig0 Wow, that girl who got all those PHS scholarships must be super talented. I can’t imagine how she has the time! I do wonder whether these is an element of exaggeration, sometimes, though. I saw on another thread someone saying their dd had a scholarship from SPGS, but from their website they don’t do academic scholarships, so it did make me wonder if the poster had got their wires crossed somehow.

WycombeGirls · 05/02/2019 11:53

I know a girl who won three scholarships at a London day school, and basically at least one scholarship everywhere she applied. But she chose to go to Wycombe Abby. I think she also won a scholarship there. There are some super girls out there - hard to believe but they exist!

WycombeGirls · 05/02/2019 11:58

Many of them usually have incredible level of energy so manage to achieve double and triple more than usual able DCs.

MrsPatmore · 05/02/2019 12:33

Anecdotally, I've heard that schools like to give the scholarships to state school pupils if all else is equal. I do know of children that have had two scholarships for the same schools but not more. However, as has been said, there are some very high achievers out there and focussed parentsWink

sandybayley · 05/02/2019 13:07

@1ndig0 - I fear the 'four scholarship' claim at PHS is a porkie pie. PHS don't offer art scholarships at 11+ - just checked the website to check I wasn't going mad.

They are girls with 2 - typically academic + music or academic + sports. You could have 3 but I don't think anyone does (although there are girls who certainly would be good enough).

Bool · 05/02/2019 13:44

Is WHS posting tmrw? Knowing my post I will be finding out early next week Grin

Jimjam68 · 05/02/2019 14:08

Yes Bool WHS letters go in the post tomorrow.

FlumePlume · 05/02/2019 14:48

Bool I sympathise, my post just keeps getting later and less reliable. I ended up getting the Sutton High letter several days late (luckily, they had sent my daughter a card, which got there the day after it was posted).

OP posts:
1ndig0 · 05/02/2019 15:28

WellI don’t know about all those scholarships tbh. This girl is possibly the most stunning pianist I’ve come across at that age, but I dont know what sports or art she does and she’s in the middle sets, so who knows?

Good luck to all those waiting on WHS. Your heads will know today no doubt. Our deputy confessed about knowing PHS results on the Wednesday of last week!

Jimjam68 · 05/02/2019 15:38

Do they send results to state schools does anyone know? I had assumed not (but considering breaking into the heads office now!)

1ndig0 · 05/02/2019 16:04

If there’s nobody else in your school doing 11 plus or WHS in particular, then I don’t see why they wouldn’t at least give you the wink or something if you ask. The deputy at our school said they can’t because about 10 sat PHS and it’s not fair to those who don’t get in (even though everyone did by the sound of it). Confused

Jimjam68 · 05/02/2019 16:16

There is a handful doing 11+ including WHS so I don’t think a wink will be forthcoming.

1ndig0 · 05/02/2019 16:18
Wink
KaliforniaDreamz · 05/02/2019 16:18

Yes they send results to state schools Jim

notaworrierxxx · 05/02/2019 16:35

Are you sure they send results to state schools ? My daughters school didn’t even know she was doing the exams - why would they send the results to her primary when they had no concern or knowledge about it (and I don’t mean that badly) ?

Poppyred25 · 05/02/2019 16:40

The state school should have provided a reference and will be contacted again if your dd accepts an offer.

KaliforniaDreamz · 05/02/2019 16:47

what poppy said

Bool · 05/02/2019 16:51

Now you are tempting me to reach out to school!
