I'll go with i Spy....for the next one (looking suspiciously at everyone getting into their cars clutching coffee cups at a service station.)

farangatang · 19/08/2018 12:18

Korma and TheThird that reminds me of arranging play dates for DS2 with other DC with ASD so they could not play together. Ellen I totally relate!!

Love the next thread title suggestions, btw.

Grin at all the in-laws/Christmas stories. Terf I'd love to tag along on one of your Christmas trips - they sound superb!

Some breakthrough news for DD today - she has actually voluntarily gone on a shopping trip WITH HER SISTER!! There is hope! Having a little taste of 'empty nest' today with the kids out and DH playing computer games in the study! Trying to read an enlightening book, but MN much more fun.

Sostenuto I hope you're on the mend and feeling much better (and that DGD is not too trying atm)

LooseAtTheSeams · 19/08/2018 12:19

I like 'I spy' as well. Smile
I asked DS if he wants me to wait just outside school on Thursday but apparently his plan is to run in, collect results and run out back home. I really hope he does remember the last bit! Or at least to text me.

sandybayley · 19/08/2018 12:29

I like I Spy as well. Speaks volumes to me as we drive across France 🇫🇷. It's a big place don't you know and the DC are somewhat trying.

Loving your PIL chat. Mine are actually very nice but my FIL's main failing is serving incredibly small portions. He loves to serve meals on side plates to control our appetite and the tea is incredibly weak 😬

mmmz · 19/08/2018 12:29

Apart from Sost's DGD are any of your DC getting nervous about Thursday, yet? DS isn't thinking about it at all.
I wonder when the nerves typically kick in for most DC? Wednesday evening? Thursday morning? When they are holding the unopened envelope? Never?

mmmz · 19/08/2018 12:35

Terf in that case, just tell him once to count you out.

Then when he arranges it, and the date has been set, tell him that's actually quite convenient as you've already got plans to be out of the house for the whole day that day so you won't be in his way.

two birds, with one stone...

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 19/08/2018 12:35

Weak tea is simply unacceptable! Hmm

My friend's DS collected results on his own a few years ago, school very close by. Picked them up at 9 and didn't contact his mum until after 12! Shock Ignored all texts etc. They were a fairly expected set of results but he had no idea how much his mum was worrying.

Oratory1 · 19/08/2018 12:38

I think it depends very much on the nature of the child, how much is riding on it and how sure they are of results.

I spy is good but brings back memories of long journeys trying to play I-spy with dyslexic child. DS - Something beginning with L- after hours of sisters trying to guess - 'L'icopter !!! Perfectly logical in his brain.

Oneteen · 19/08/2018 12:40

My song choice for DD will be : Wishing on Astar...

I love Christmas Dinner with my family - its something I really look forward too...its probably one of just a few occasions where we all get together and really enjoy playing games etc....but I guess its difficult in some wider family circles.

Dd home and still chilled Smile...very proud of her for how she has embraced NCS and found the whole experience worth while...

sandybayley · 19/08/2018 12:44

DS1 has admitted to dreams about results over the past few days but doesn't seem overly anxious. I think he is quite keen to get it over and done with and move onto the next stage TBH.

ChilliPowderMild · 19/08/2018 12:48

I think it's now occupying dd's mind most every waking minute, despite her best efforts. She just came out to see if I'd heard the rumours about the grade bands.
She likes to cover every eventuality - we have plans for 'better than expected', 'just as expected', and 'klaxon klaxon activate ejector seat'.

She has been worrying about her friends' reactions if her results are awful so she is laying a little groundwork on social media, in the form of a few 'X is...feeling like she has been barking up the wrong tree and wondering if it's all too late to change her mind...'. I think the psychology there is so that she can say she was considering other options anyway!
The Plan for T-Day is that we will enter the hall together at 9.30, then return to the car to view the evidence. Then we either speed off into oblivion, or she returns to the hall to congratulate/commiserate with others.
Either way, it's Pizza Hut dinner on Thursday, then home for ME to open GCSE Gin bottle no 93.
I'm so very nearly cooked with this, get your fork ready for me.

goodbyestranger · 19/08/2018 12:51

DD4 has mentioned results but then we've just done the 12 hour drive down from Scotland so it feels like we've come back to collect them. She's a bit apprehensive clearly.

sandybayley while we were away (I always have far more dreams in Scotland - no idea why) I dreamed that I had to wade through literally miles of flooded corridors in a deserted Victorian institution of some sort to collect them for her (I woke up before opening the envelope so the dream wasn't even much use, just felt tiring and wet!).

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 19/08/2018 12:56

DS3 says 'uhh' when asked if he's thinking about results. I interpret that as 'not really, maybe a little bit.' He's more interested in where I'll take him for a celebratory meal. I fancied a nice, sit down waitress service sort of place. He wants 5 Guys. Sigh. At least it's not KFC

mmmz · 19/08/2018 13:01

DS is asking for Pizza Express on Thursday. DH and I keep suggesting more memorable places, but all DS wants is either a pizza. So, Pizza Express it is.

Oneteen · 19/08/2018 13:04

Not quite sure yet what the plan is for Thursday other than I will take DD into school and she will meet up with friends ...there were lots of parents in the school when the DC's collected their A Levels but I am not in a hurry to have my picture on the school social media (so think I will give that a miss and would prefer to sit outside and wait).

DD also has her prize to collect from last years awards (we were away at prize giving), so if exams are not as expected- she will have something to cheer her up!

mmmz · 19/08/2018 13:11

Does anyone else's DC have to register for year 12 on Thursday?

goodbyestranger · 19/08/2018 13:17

DD4 does.

Jinglebells99 · 19/08/2018 13:19

@Mmmz lots of universities give unconditional offers before the A level results come out. I know that Birmingham University offered my friend’s dd unconditional for chemistry if she firmed them and another friend’s dd ‘offer was changed to unconditional before the results came out at Portsmouth. Also Btec results came out about a month ago, they are also continually assessed and can be used to access uni courses.

Cblue · 19/08/2018 13:23

Funnily enough melt down was Friday - said she just wanted to know one way or another and that it felt like her life was on hold

Doesn't know whether she will be doing humanities or sciences (hinges on maths results) or even which 6th form she will go to.

She's trying not to think about it but can't help herself.

LooseAtTheSeams · 19/08/2018 13:24

DS only has to register on Thursday if he's staying at same school, which he isn't. Unless he changes his mind. The other choices are the following week and the beginning of September for enrolment.

LooseAtTheSeams · 19/08/2018 13:26

CBlue I can totally understand that - it's a lot of uncertainty to deal with before they can get on to the next stage. I think they just want to know now whatever the result.

Cherryburn · 19/08/2018 13:37

I think DS is succeeding in putting results out of his mind. He’s back from his holiday with friends and apparently all mention of the ‘r’ word was banned while they were away!

Pretty sure he won’t want me to go up to school with him on Thursday. The plan is that he’ll collect his results then head back home, pick up his stuff, and leave for Reading. Unless, of course, we need to somehow find a plan B if he hasn’t met the requirements to stay on at his current school Confused

Oneteen · 19/08/2018 13:37

DD does not have to register (but she is staying on) - she already has her timetable (although this will change because she wants to take Chemistry instead of DT).

It must be difficult with the DC's waiting on results for places etc - uncertainty is horrible....although DD still has to achieve the 6 x B's (6's)

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 19/08/2018 13:40

DS3 has to register by 3pm on Thursday if he gets his preferred sixth form and straight after results if he stays at his current school.

Oratory1 · 19/08/2018 13:43

DS just said he was excited abou Thursday - hmmm ! Though when quizzed further he just wants to know now - and I think he ll really feel like he’s in sixth form and doing a levels after he s been in to school for the results.

Previously dc have gone off alone in to tutors office to get results and then come back to the car. It’s changed now so it all happens in a big hall which may suggest parents expected too - like PP I’m not sure I want to hover like a spare part and potentially accident my get in any pics - much rather be outside out of the way !! I guess I’ll just go with the flow on the day and see what DS wants - a bit worried that expectations are high as he worked hard but we ll see - I think it’s easier as his will be a range probably from 4 to 8 which takes away the focus on individual grades.
