And your MIL might like to know that the coffee shop Poles are leaving in droves and not being replaced. We were in Warsaw for my nephew's wedding the day immediately after the result of the Referendum was announced and DD3 got a bit (very) tiddly and tried to persuade all the bar staff to come back to the UK with us, as a last chance alley sort of thing, and they were all very much not having any of it - they said they were done with the UK. So good luck to your MIL with that attitude.

Oops - politics.

TerfTerf2 · 18/08/2018 21:01

There's lots of Eastern Europeans who work near here and many are leaving because of feeling unwanted 😕 We are screwed as a nation if we don't welcome foreign workers here. MIL loves Nigel and Boris too. 🙄🙄

I think it's funny that we've moved on from moaning about exam boards to MILs to politics Grin

Oneteen · 18/08/2018 21:06

Same feeling with the Romanians too. There was definitely a slightly negative feeling towards the British when we over there at NY. Its quite sad really because most Eastern Europeans are such hard workers.

I love Poland and think its such a beautiful country and TBH cannot understand why they would want to come to the UK apart from work!

Stickerrocks · 18/08/2018 21:08

Well, let's face it, we're in limbo for a few days now. Half of us are on parent duty, half are without DC (inspired move on my part) and some of us have combined both. I really don't see much hope of this thread lasting until 00.01 on Thursday though.

Perhaps we should start a word association game which we can use to generate the next thread title. I'll go first:

WAITING

TerfTerf2 · 18/08/2018 21:09

Oh and my foreign half is German..dont mention the war...that has always gone down well with MIL whose uncles who fought off the jerries didn't make an appearance until the 2014 anniversary celebrations "if it wasn't for my brave relations, we'd all be German"! Ooooh the horror!!

Oneteen · 18/08/2018 21:20

OK - ANTICIPATING ...also perhaps we should have Room 101 for THOSE exams (Further Maths and IGCSE History CIE and was it AQA Biology?)

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 21:21

HALLUCINATING? (Although that might depend exactly how much gin you put in your travel mugs Grin).

Oneteen · 18/08/2018 21:25

I can see there being a rush to purchase travel mugs on Wednesday ...Gin

TerfTerf2 · 18/08/2018 21:25

...FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU...

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 21:38

So while we're at it, does anyone have any tips for quadrupling the strength of coffee served at the home of in-laws without causing lasting offence? My very lovely PIL insists on making a round every hour or so just to break up the unimaginative conversation. I've tried offering to make it myself, but he's so FAST on his feet when he senses that his kitchen may be invaded.

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 21:39

Or perhaps "FOR A GRADE LIKE YOU"?

I've got an earworm now.

mmmz · 18/08/2018 21:56

Breakthrough... we've got HEAT on the TV tonight (al Pacino version, if there's two). First scene up was a six scene and IT DIDNT GET SWITCHED OFF!!

Word association... waiting... 10 green bottle type songs....? Or I Spy.

GCSEs 2018 (high teens) I spy with my little eye the results in the distance.

(Yes, I'm still bored!)

mmmz · 18/08/2018 21:57

Korma just say last cup of coffee was best yet as it was strong... can't be strong enough for you blah blah

mmmz · 18/08/2018 21:59

Sorry that should have been hint, hint, not blah, blah. The conversation over dinner here ( a mere 2 hours tonight) is wearing off on me!

mmmz · 18/08/2018 22:00

I spy with my little eye something beginning with R

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 22:04

mmmz Would it help at all if I recounted all the very detailed conversations we have had at the in-laws about the optimum consistency of Branston Pickle?

Unfortunately hints don't work. PIL knows for a fact that we like coffee very strong. He frequently refers to the fact he couldn't possibly drink it like us young 'uns do. And then presents us with another cup of dishwater.

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 22:04

I feel a bit guilty now. He does make the most fantastic roast dinner. Just wish he'd let me at the cafetiere!

Oneteen · 18/08/2018 22:05

Chicken Take either a cafetiere with you (make an excuse that you struggle with some coffees now).

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 22:08

Do you think the DDs would tell on me if I had a travel kettle and cafetiere in our room?

mmmz · 18/08/2018 22:09

You know Korma, it would! I haven't heard that story even once before and it's the lack of variety that's doing my head in!
It's like when I used to take my DC to another house when they were little. To my DC, the other child's toys were always more interesting than his own.

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 22:11

I like "I spy with my little eye something beginning with R"

Although if we carry on supporting each other through enforced proximity to relatives, the next thread may not get as far as Thursday!

Astronotus · 18/08/2018 22:17

Lurking here, but decided to break cover as you are all so funny! I'll now be suspicious of all parents' coffee cups!

AChickenCalledKorma · 18/08/2018 22:18

Well the strange thing is that PIL genuinely prefers the consistency of supermarket own brand pickle to trademarked Branston. And don't even get him started on the optimum balance of mustard and vinegar in a shop bought Piccalilli.

It is, however, preferable to complaints about the right-wing bias of the national press, or the endemic levels of corruption local government. I work for a local authority and do try not to take this personally!

The trouble is I strongly suspect they have heard all our stories before as well. And they are absolutely fabulous as in-laws go, judging by some of the tales you hear on this site. So I really shouldn't complain even though it's fun.

mmmz · 18/08/2018 22:21

MIL is kind hearted.

Oneteen · 18/08/2018 22:22

chicken I think you deserve a very large mug Gin...perhaps PIL should go on that program where they compare prices and brands.
