11+ Mock results for HBS/Latymer

Hi
I was wondering if others that have been through the 11+ process can please give an indication based on their DCs performance in this papers or a tutor that knows. I know it will be a different cohort and all depends on performance on the day etc. Apologies, it's long.

My DD did her 1st CEM mock exam with a centre and got 62% (32nd percentile!) in May. She didn't answer a lot of questions and made random guesses for a fair few when she had a minute to go. It helped her learn not to waste time on a question.

She did the CGP CEM pack 1 Set A in June at home and got 67%. She's done Set B today and scored 52%. The publisher reckons 85%. What were your DD's scoring please?

She did the GL (Latymer format) Paper 1 for both Maths and VR and got an average of 85%.

Is she on track for the 2 superselectives? Her comprehension and shuffled sentences are very weak and she easily scored 2 in these sections. When she's not timed she can do it but takes a very long time.

Thanks for any help.

This sounds like a question you should post in the elevenplusforum.co.uk website. There’s a herts/north London section and a lot of people on there who’ll definitely know the answer for those schools. Good lucj

When is she sitting them? If it’s this September then she’s nowhere near being at the level needed, you’re looking at getting into the 90%+ region realistically. If it’s to sit the papers in another year then she might have a chance. Regardless, I’d have a couple of good non selective back ups

Thank you both. TartanTerror, I will do.

Careerontrack we do have very good local non-selectives. Most of her Latymer mistakes are "silly mistakes" hopefully she will get over them in the next 4 weeks! e.g. question asks answer in metres she chooses the cm answer etc.

Agree you need to be in high 80s and into 90s to stand a chance. We got our raw mock results back and could see the anon class results.. from a cohort of 30, 10 pupils got over 80% and 3 got over 90%.

I think her Latymer scores are entirely on track. The maths is known as challenging with some nuances so she's doing well.

The CEM scores are a little off the pace given that only 300 qualify for round 2.. The VR aspect favours those who are great spellers and readers- it's a big vocab test basically. I don't personally think it points to intelligence, just whether your child is a fantastic reader.

Thanks both.

FanDabbyFloozy She reads loads but just for pleasure iyswim. It's the comprehension and shuffled sentences that bring her down. The CGP Paper 2 she did had 2 sections on comprehension. The 1st one was 12 mins, she had not finished reading it with a minute left! Her spelling is really good which helps her with missing letters type questions. Same with her maths/NR.

Just don't know if to abandon the CEM and focus on GL. We liked Latymer a lot more but it's a slightly longer journey (55mins vs 25 mins on bus). On the other hand comprehension and shuffled sentences might not even be in the CEM paper as it not a set format. In her words, she's worked too hard to not sit the paper and it's best to have a go.

Stick with it! Even if the CEM doesn't work out, it's all good practice for Latymer a few days later.

They're such different test formats. You need to concentrate on one imo. She's way off for HBS where the marks come down to decimal places. Focus on nailing the writing too, that's so important for Latymer. How's her written comp?

Mamaof2cuties · 30/07/2018 10:05

Thank you both.

Fan Latymer exam is 1st. We've decided to focus on improving the Latymer type paper as can't figure how to increase reading speed now. She will still attempt the other 3 CGP CEM papers and sit the HBS exam anyway.

Ourkid she's a lot better with standard comprehension and writing which have more decent time allowance. She's done the sample papers and independent school papers.

It's just getting through the super tough 1st round!
