My dc is home edded, we have used an external tutor for English.
It transpires the anthologies were updated and we didn't get the memo.
Say paper 1 on Monday and if course didn't recognise the piece.
We have just received updated anthologies, with one day to go until paper 2.
How much s**t are we in would you say?

I don't know for sure but I'd think it would be impossible to learn new texts overnight

Sounds like the tutor has messed up, she/he should have checked the syllabus or was it changed at the last minute?

ReservoirDogs · 06/06/2018 19:16

Which board is it?

Oscha · 06/06/2018 19:19

Which board? All you can do is study the new texts as much as you reasonably can in the time-all the skills learned will still apply. I’d also prepare to have to retake.

I’m a tutor and I’d be mortified if I did this-I actually can’t imagine a way to make it up to the child and parent. 😣

“When candidates have been fully prepared for the specification but the wrong texts have been chosen, special consideration may be given at the discretion of the awarding body.
Centres are advised that it is their responsibility to ensure that the correct texts are taught. Where this has not happened there can be no guarantee that a candidate will receive special consideration. Such instances will be investigated by the awarding body on a case- by-case basis.
Where the wrong texts have been taught, it is essential that the texts studied must have been examined in the current specification in a previous examination series.”

You need to contact the exam board asap for advice.

It's Edexcel specification A.

Thanks all.
Noble I didn't realise there might be an option to contact the board.
Tutor seems most unconcerned, just said "oh i think I sent it to the wrong person, sorry about that"
Had been playing it down on the basis my dc is a 'strong candidate 'Hmm
Am fully prepared to face a resit, but didn't want resits on college applications.
Dc is calmer than me, just said to me "Please don't get upset with me if I don't do well mum"
I'm struggling not to cry, totally propped up by wine at the moment.

The 'Getting Started Guide' on the Edexcel A website has a brief but useful summary of each text - which identifies theme, structure and key language features - look under 'Teaching and Learning Materials' then 'Qualification Guide' - 'Getting Started Guide' - there's no padlock.

You could probably download some free and paid for resources on tes resources - quite a few igcse English teachers offer lesson/revision guides.

Look on Youtube for lessons on the texts.

Clavinova · 06/06/2018 20:18

Sorry - missed out the first step - 'Course Materials' then 'Teaching and Learning' (2016 specification)

PattiStanger · 06/06/2018 20:21

I'd be really cross with the tutor, don't they realise what a serious mistake they've made. I'd be making sure everyone I knew was told about it

Teenmum60 · 06/06/2018 20:22

If its IGCSE Eng Lang then I think its an open book exam - therefore its not quite the end of the world ... I think there is 10 poems and he will be able to see the poems.

Agree with the above have a look at the TES site for key points of all the poems...also look at the mark scheme on the website ...(qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/International%20GCSE/English%20Language%20A/2011/Specification%20and%20sample%20assessments/UG027048-International-GCSE-in-English-Language-Spec-A-4EA0-Issue-2-for-web.pdf)

IHeartKingThistle · 06/06/2018 20:39

I've taught that specification and yes the Jan exam was the last time you could use the old anthology. I'm sorry this has happened. But in all honesty, given that you get the text in the exam, if the student can pick out language features and analyse to a good enough standard, they should definitely still be able to pass. Try not to worry.

CarrieErbag · 06/06/2018 20:49

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate your help.
I am trying to be positive and hoping that dc doesn't just scrape through and scupper any A level options.
Ah well, wish us luck for Friday!Confused
