How many taught hours in sixth form?

Dd reckons she gets 15 hours a week currently (haven’t checked her timetable). She’s in year 12 doing 3x A levels. So some free periods/study periods as well.

She says the teachers have told them that next year they’ll have less taught hours as the school can’t afford to replace teachers so what teachers are left are having to be spread about.

Not sure if this will happen or not but it just got me wondering what the average number of taught hours in sixth form is?

Ours get 13 hours, cut from 16 for the same reason. We just can't provide the same quality or quantity of education with the cuts we've had (and are still having).

My DS gets 16 taught hours a week (5 hours per subject + 1 hour for RE in a Catholic school)

My DD has 33 taught lessons per fortnight just on her 3 A-levels. Though it’s 50 mins per lesson, not an hour. The remaining 17 are private study (aka frees)!

Ok, so 15 sounds about average.

Dd reckons the teachers have talked about lessons being halved for next year. I’m hoping that’s teenage embellishment.

Ds only gets 4 hours per subject!

DS got 4hrs 40 mins per subject in lower 6th, it increased to 5hrs 20 mins per subject in upper 6th. BUT, his school has incredibly long holidays, 2 weeks at Autumn half term, 4 weeks at Christmas, spring half term and then at least 3 weeks off for Easter. And normal lessons stop after summer exams which are the week after summer half term so that they can do time-consuming nonsense AKA enrichment. So if you compare total number of actual lessons over an academic year a solid 4 hours a week is a better deal.

His school also has a head who joked to parents at the leavers dinner about how they had to pay a huge bill for the last term fees despite their DCs not actually being in school for that term. Some parents are struggling to pay fees and are seriously unimpressed.

At my school 5 lessons per week per subject, but lessons are only 50 or55 minutes, so probably on average only 4 h 30 at best. At DCs school 5 x 1 hr lessons per subject.
Lots of schools really are struggling to make ends meet though.

My son is at a very large 6th form college doing 3 A levels. He gets 13.5 hours a week plus a tutorial which is 1.5 hours long. This is not due to any cuts - this is how it has always been at this 6th form. So 15 hours sounds fine to me.

5 hours teaching per subject. Plus 2 hours of games and 2 hours EPQ.

Independent school.

4 1/2 hours a week per subject. (9 hours a fortnight) Plus games, 1 hour a week and EPQ tutorials, about 1 hour a week. 'Full time' courses are defined by DWP at 12 hours + a week.

Nine hours per A level subject per fortnight, puts EPQ, PHSE and sessions with the French language assistant. The rest are study periods, for which she has to remain in school.

Ours get 10 hours a fortnight per subject.

So 15 a week for 3 A levels is standard (plus tutorial, general studies, EPQ, optional courses if they opt for it etc)

My son is taking 3 Advanced Highers (slightly higher standard than A levels) at a state school in Scotland.

They take the course in just one year and he has 5 hours per subject except one subject where he only has 3 hours - there are only three pupils in this class and he'll get a lot more attention so I'm not too worried. This subject is taken from scratch though (it's a social science he's never studied before) so it will be a tall order.

It is about learning to teach your self like they have to do in uni . Self study . And wanting to work.

DC1 is doing the IB so has 3 subjects at 5 hours each, 3 subjects at 3 hours each and one single hour. That’s 25 hours teaching time each week!!!

And as for self study - 2 or 3 hours a night typically and a full day at the weekend.

I teach a full time 6th form course (BTEC Extended Diploma) which is equivalent in size to 3 A Levels. The official guided learning hours (published by the exam board) for courses of this size is 1080 hours, which, over two years of school terms works out at 14 per week (that's assuming 2 equal years, which obviously isn't always the case - Year 12 tends to be longer than Year 13) I teach my group for 17 hours per week.

State comprehensive. 5 hours per subject. Their timetable is a 2 weekly one so DD has 14 contact hours one week and 16 the next. They also have one hour of tutorial and one of enrichment per week.

In year 12 DD was studying 4 subjects so only had 6 frees a fortnight. She was practically on her knees with tiredness at the end of year 12.
