School shoes for boy starting secondary school

Hello
I have a son with ASD who is starting secondary school in September. He has an EHCP:Statement . He is pretty academic but struggles with fine and gross motor skills and social and communication issues.
He cannot tie laces.
Would he be bullied wearing these shoes do you think? I'm starting to look at uniform etc.. in preparation.

He will be attending a small city Catholic Comprehensive if that helps.

They are probably ok but do check that flat rubber soles are an acceptable style, some schools expect a proper heel and sole. Could you use black elastic or locklaces on a lace up?

They look fine to me in terms of bullying, just check the school’s particular uniform policy. I have heard of schools being picky about the green label...

They look great - just cut off the green /red labels if necessary, that's what we do. Most kids wear Kickers at my sons' secondary.

They look fine. If you want a lace up though try Hickies, rubberised ties which turn a lace up into a slip on - you can get them in black and my daughter loved them before she could tie laces.

I doubt very much anyone will notice his shoes!

But do check that the school allows Kickers.

My DS (now in Y9) has mostly worn black slip on Clarks shoes whilst he's been at secondary school - would that be an alternative option for you?

My DS who also has fine motor skills issues uses hickies as you also need to think about trainers for PE and as their feet grow its very difficult to find shoes/trainers that aren't laced

I was worried about bullying too, so hopefully Velcro Kickers would be ok. It states on school webpage shoes but trainers or trainer style 🤔
Yes I'm worried about football boots and trainers. DS is 10, 11 in August and already a size 7.5 shoe! He will struggle with PE as it is without the footwear being an issue . He really dislikes football and team games due to his coordination difficulties.

DS2 (also has ASD) finds it difficult to tie shoelaces securely due to hypermobility in his hands and wrists. He has elastic laces with knots in them that need tying once and then they stretch so he can slip his shoes on and off. They look enough like regular laces that no one has commented. I'll try to find a link.

Autolock laces available on Amazon, eBay etc.

My son wore those all through secondary school and didn't have any comments on them from his peers.

Also op , look up synch bands for non tie shoe laces. I use them for my high tops and they are brilliant.

The recommendation of autolock laces was for the PE trainers and/or football boots. As far as school shoes are concerned, there'll be other boys wearing velcro shoes, especially in Y7 & Y8.

Get locklaces for PE shoes (Sports direct sell them, as does Amazon etc). Can use to end of yr11.

I'm not sure about the green on the Kicker shoe. DS can wear shoes like that but must be all black. Any / every shoe place sells them with velcro (DS is in size adult 7 now). IIRC, DS1 wore slip-ons for a while, too (no shortage of old man shoes in this area).

My ds year 8 and wears velcro shoes. Takes an age with laces. We have get them from Tesco and Shoezone. Shoe zone don't tend to last long but pretty cheap.
We got him velcro trainers. 20 odd quid Adidas ones with a velcro strap. The Adidas was us relenting as personally don't like labels. However, I am not nearly 13!

Slip ons from Clarke's and bungee laces on trainers/football boots.

They are really easy to use and don't come undone.

The school that my dd goes to doesn't allow velcro shoes, so it will be worth checking the uniform policy to see what is allowed.

It is yet another thing for us to worry about my asd ds who will hopefully be starting in Sept 19. I have no idea what I will do.

My son can tie laces but he has lock laces on his trainers and football boots for ease when they are cold and muddy.

Put no tie laces into google or Amazon and there are a whole host of options.

Ds2 just slips his feet into his already tied laces as he just can't be bothered to tie them. Your son is not alone not being able to tie laces. You should be able to find something that works for him.
