Work Experience - Y10, Y12, or both?

When our school opened a sixth form it stopped doing work experience in year 10 and now only does it in year 12. Is that normal for schools with a sixth form?

Not here, it's done in yr 10 and it has 6th form.

ggirl, does that mean they do it in year 10 and year 12?

I remember in the 1980s my school did it in year 10, but not in sixth form so maybe it's usually one or the other.

Our comp only goes up to y11 but stopped WE for y10 because:
a) getting employers to take on 14/15yos was hard, especially with newer safeguarding rules (eg can't send a 14yo out with a plumber in his van for the day)
b) everyone has to stay on in education / apprenticeship now anyway

They now have an 'Enterprise week' where they do a 'dragons den / apprentice' style competition, and work on personal statements and get interview practice instead.

My children's school has a sixth form and does it in year 12.

We occasionally still accept year 10s from other local schools to do with experience in my office. They all have sixth forms as well, so it's obviously variable. It's much easier to find suitable work for year 12s and they tend to look a bit less scared!!

I think work experience in Year 10 is quite difficult, as a lot of places won't take them until they are 16. I know a lot of schools suggest it at the end of Year 11, when most (not all) will be 16 and they have a super long holiday after GCSEs.

Aĺl our local schools do it in year 10, plus the 6th forms do it in yr12 too. I'm the contact for my firm and it's a nightmare trying to find enough meaningful roles. I end up with a good few joining me!

Ours do both, it is a pain since schools stopped getting the funding to arrange it all. We have kids from all over the county trying to arrange for THE SAME WEEK - thousands of kids. Bloomin crazy.

DD did Cafe Nero in Y10 - she figures there is one in all the uni towns and she has been asked to come back for a job interview when she turns 16.

ggirl · 24/04/2018 21:28

OP , I'm not sure if they do it in Yr 12 . They didn't when dd was in yr 12 .
Ds in yr 10 so doing it next month.
