commute Croydon area

Hello!,
my DS has been offered a place in a GS in Sutton. That means taking the overground to West Croydon and then a bus. I was wondering how safe is the exchange he has to do in West Croydon for an 11-year-old? That's my main concern, as it's supposed to be busy any time of the day. Otherwise, it's a very straightforward trip (we've done it a couple of times)

Well the bus station is only over the road from West Croydon station, if that is where he catches the bus.
Loads of students and commuters will be doing the same route at this time, and I think he would be fine.

The town centre can be a bit iffy at times.
