Considering Lancing for ds. He would be a day boy. Gifted musically, likely music scholarship material. Also strong in maths, science and Latin. Struggles in English, the humanities and sport. No medals for guessing he has ASD! Prep school think it’s right for him, I liked it on the basis of my visits but do wonder how flexible/enlightened it will be in relation to his needs. He will likely require no more than twice termly visits from his ABA consultant by year 9.
Any informed opinions on the school gratefully received.

I ran into a recent former music scholar from Lancing and she had nothing but good things to say about it. Maybe check out how influential sport is in the general school ethos and how much this informs how the students feel about the school? How likely a music scholarship candidate is he?

Thank you, that is good to hear. By year 8 we expect him to have achieved at least grade 7 and grade 5 on his first and second instruments and we are given to understand that’s the right ballpark. He’s also v good at music theory - just done grade 5, scoring 90% plus in past papers which considering his asd does impair him in test situations is pretty good.

If he is grade 7 in year 8 on his principal instrument, he's doing very well! That's something he can really feel proud of and Lancing should definitely want to hear him. Have you taken him along to meet the director of music? Seeing how they get on together and you feel they are well matched, that's always a good sign. Show him around the school and see if he likes it.

Thank you that’s very kind. He’s been there as part of a group during their string day. He seems to like the feel of it. It’s fairly small and manageable which is important for him. He likes the idea of playing concerts in the chapel. I think the music bit will be fine - it’s more the academic side I wonder about. He’s a clever lad in many ways but needs teachers to work with him quite flexibly.

I don't know anything about the academic side unfortunately. There should be a housemaster or a tutor specifically assigned to him as there is in any school. I guess you would just have to try and negotiate the most suitable one for him. Your current school should help you with this and be a good point of liaison. Wherever he ends up, good luck!
