Strongly recommend Waterstones for WE. They had a properly structured scheme when DD did it in year 10, which leads into opportunities for holiday jobs at college.

I did enjoy film adaptation of R & J with Leonardo DiCaprio back in the day. Maybe I should watching it, you know just to help with her studies Grin

Oddsocks15 · 04/03/2018 17:00

Ooohh good tip about Waterstones Stickerrocks

Teenmum60 · 04/03/2018 17:17

Finally I think we are making a break through the dining room walls are being turned a detailed revision guide (post it notes onto a wall charts for each subject then topic), Mon - Sun wall chart which she can move things from the revision list too each week...and finally a separate wall chart with the post it notes that have been covered (with a confidence rating scale of 1-10)...then we have a lucky dip which she can pick a small pressy out when she has moved 10 post it notes to the completed list....

DD has Biology test tomorrow which she has revised for and is playing Piano in the music festival in the afternoon.

DD has very little revision to do in English Lit apart from revision of 'Of Mice and Men' and Anthology Poetry, the Modern Drama and Literary Heritage Text are coursework (40% of exam marks)....so all will be done prior to the exams in May/June.

Teenmum60 · 04/03/2018 17:25

Waterstones work experience would be heaven for my DD although I doubt if she would do that much work (she would be reading the books)...she has got back into reading paper books (she transferred to kindle a few years back and then to reading books on phone) so nice to see paper books again !

Bluebelle - please apologise to your DD from me - I was probably one of those grumpy, moaning middle aged women she spoke about --- sometimes older women cannot control hormones .. thankfully I did try controlling my short fuses.

BlueBelle123 · 04/03/2018 17:43

Stickerrocks my suspicions have been confirmed, I thought that might be what you did!! The funny thing about his work experience was the in depth knowledge he gained about Love IslandGrin

Hearing about all your DC studying English really makes me worry about DS he just doesn't revise it, my only hope is that as English has finished the syllabus all lessons will be revision.

Stickerrocks · 04/03/2018 17:57

Yes, I have my own practice and I teach accountants how to pass their professional exams. I've spent today telling my class how to pass their exams later this week.

Waterstones made DD give a presentation on her favourite books, they gave her a big activity pack to complete if everyone was busy & she had nothing to do, she reorganised & tidied areas of the shop, she had limitless hot chocs from the café & they still remember her 8 months later. I would love to do it, but the staff said the hours are dire and the pay is bad, so I'll stick with debits & credits for now Sad.

My DDs would have loved Waterstones, sounds well thought out too, Any suggestions for work experience for someone hoping to go into work with Computers/IT (probably apprenticeship route after A levels though things may change)

Teenmum60 · 04/03/2018 18:52

user1469682920 Not sure where you are based ....I have a contact for Network Rail Computers IT Work Experience but its based in Milton Keynes...she gave me her contact details 18 months ago but DD is not into IT anymore...

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 19:02

1st May is my dgds first GCSE exam .....Spanish oral. She has just been informed by email.

Oddsocks15 · 04/03/2018 19:12

Eeek Shock sos

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 19:14

Yes its just around the corner @oddsocks and really brings it homeShock

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 19:18

Dgd will not be doing work/work experience/voluntary work till exams are over. Her next exams after Spanish oral may 9th and 10th art exam.

androbbob · 04/03/2018 20:22

Gosh the pace moves quick round here! Snow was minimal here, light dusting but all gone now.

Mocks again here this week - seems to be the 2nd papers of last years exams - DD appears to be relatively relaxed about tomorrow - English Language and RE.

@oddsocks - your house sounds like ours - all afraid to speak or comment for fear of a blow up. 70 days until first exam and then 5 weeks of it - just need to keep biting tongue and @stikerrocks - you suffering with attitude as well! The copying of prom dress is a nightmare, some girls are horrific.

@Teenmum love the new prom frock

@mmzz - my DD is foing NCS at her choice - I had heard of it last year but she came home buzzing from school after they had been in to sell it. She goes on 23rd July and is really looking forward to it. She is going with her mate. It also fills in 4 weeks of their long break!

DD is interested in politics so I wondered the use of getting some work experience in that field at some point in the next year or so. Already done work experience and it opened her eyes, and I think the food bank experience may be interesting experience for her.

70 days to first exam here apparently! Eeek!

DoNotBringLulu · 04/03/2018 20:37

On finishing GCSEs....My ds is writing a bucket list of all the countries in the world he would like to visit and needs to start saving now! Starting with earning himself some money in summer hols.

NCS isn't for him but it sounds great. My Mum is looking forward to him finishing GCSEs as he will be getting the train to visit her and do some gardening/mowing lawn/climbing a ladder to change bird feeder etc. He is not 16 until the end of July; he has no idea what sort of paid job he'd like to earn money, but two big suoermarkets close to us seem to take on a lot of young people.

Good luck to all continuing with mocks next week...Maths and German for ds. All seems rather weird the GCSEs are so close.

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 20:39

58 days to dgds first exam here. 1st of may.

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 20:41

Getting scary really.

Sostenueto · 04/03/2018 20:42

Can't see the point of more mocks, I know its good for revision but............

DoNotBringLulu · 04/03/2018 20:43

mmzz I enjoy Mr Bruff too....he analyses the poetry really well with plenty of background.

Teenmum60 · 04/03/2018 21:20

androbbob I'm still failing to bite my tongue but we have made progress today.

I don't think DD has looked at Mr. Bruff I have mentioned it to her - will have to mention it again.

Mini personal statement completed by DD and sent to the school sixth form. Interestingly they have stated that they are doing 3 induction days at the start of July - would love DD to do induction days even if she most likely will be staying on at present school but dates are going to coincide with work experience.

DDs French Oral is 30th April - so pleased that it is two weeks prior to written exams.

user1469682920 · 04/03/2018 21:37

That's very kind teenmum - Milton Keynes would be just about doable

Teenmum60 · 04/03/2018 21:43

Will send you a PM

Oddsocks15 · 04/03/2018 22:16

Teen struggle to bite my tongue most days! androbbob it’s been a hard road so far. I’ve had a lot of angst with DD, I’ve been concerned about her mental health, not sure we are out of the woods yet.

sos I agree, don’t see the point of more mocks either.

mmzz · 04/03/2018 22:18

Might be a bit late to correct my typo, but I meant to write that Mr Bruff has been describing the sexual imagery and allusions. Do you bite your thumb at me sir? Apparently that was the medieval equivalent of the modern day gesture done with one an bent at the elbow and the other thrust across the biceps.
(You can tell it got my attention!)
