Well DS hasn't done hardly anything for about 2 weeks first he was ill (can't be helped I guessWink) and now he is out sledging when he eventually comes back frozen to the bone he retires to his bed to warm up and that's about the last we see of him, except to eat of course! The illness and snow has wrecked his routine, glad when its gone so we can all get back to normal......whatever that is Smile

drummersmum · 02/03/2018 17:00

DS summer is pretty full. He likes to practice 4-5 hours a day during the holidays. He also has a family trip visiting grandparents in the sunshine, one week music course, few days with other grandpa in the countryside, and one week of rehearsing a musical in town followed by performing it at the Edinburgh fringe for another whole week. Unfortunately he will be in Edinburgh on results day and won't get to go to school to collect...i need to find time to go through university options, plan open days, and have several talks about the future which he never has time for now!

TheSecondOfHerName · 02/03/2018 17:10

He likes to practice 4-5 hours a day during the holidays

That's very impressive. DS2 does practise regularly, but we're lucky if DD (Y9) practises for 4-5 minutes.

mmzz · 02/03/2018 17:11

@drummersmum Sorry, but I have to ask: don't you mind the noise your DS makes when practising?

Oddsocks15 · 02/03/2018 17:23

DD hopefully going to do National Citizen Service. Possibly Scout camp but this may overlap with NCS. Family holiday then results day Wine

no Idea how revision is going but high usage of post it notes!! Grin

TheDonald · 02/03/2018 17:41

DD's summer is looking pretty full on too.

We're away for 3.5 weeks straight after prom. Then she will be away with her dad for a week. She will be working some extra weekdays when she is home (plus usual Saturdays) and we're going camping in August.

She's got an induction day in June at college then a registration day after results (all being well.)

She keeps reminding me it's not actually that much longer than normal holidays so I think she won't end up with much down time. We're really excited about our holiday though so that will keep us going through the exam period I hope. Today I'm researching a trek up a volcano!

LooseAtTheSeams · 02/03/2018 17:44

Hmm...not sure what DS1 wants to do this Summer. He has a week's tour to Germany with his music groups. He appears to be planning to hang out with his band(!)
However, he's revised computer science, maths and physics today AND he showed me some of his exam prep for art, which looked good.

BlueBelle123 · 02/03/2018 17:51

Is my DS the only one frolicking in the snow, sounds like all your DC are making the most of their unofficial holidaysHmm

TheDonald · 02/03/2018 18:10

No frolicking in the snow here. Dd hates it. I tried to persuade her to come sledging but she said she'd only come to watch me sledge. Not do it herself. Grin

She's not really making the most of it by doing revision though.

TheDrsDocMartens · 02/03/2018 18:13

Dd2 has a week with her Dad, 5 days sports comp, week at outdoor day camp thing. Wanted NCS but overlapped with Dad as does the yr11 residential uni summer school.

If you see any free /cheap ones she’d be interested!

TheSecondOfHerName · 02/03/2018 18:15

DS2 doesn't enjoy the snow and never has. He is quite underweight so gets cold v.quickly, has poor circulation in his extremities and has sensory issues. Even at peak snowball/sledging age, he could only cope with going out in it for a few minutes.

drummersmum · 02/03/2018 18:39

blue he went sledging on Wed and we just made a snow man in the garden taking advantage of cancelled piano lesson.
mmzz I don't mind. DH tolerates it aswell. We're used to it after all these years. If I'm trying to work I may put in earplugs. Sometimes he shares the hours amongst drums, snare and marimba. I love the marimba so much I go down to listen.
thesecond during the year it's frustrating for him because he's st a very academic school and he will always put academic duty first. But when the holidays come, yeah, it's like he's given wings, can't stop, the freedom!
It's so interesting to see what all your DC are doing.

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2018 19:46

DD is going on a cruise with me, then 3 weeks NCS. When she gets back she needs to work to build up her cash reserves and secure her job for next term before someone else pinches it.

Not much revision here today, but she did build a snow lump. I had to teach a virtual classroom online because we couldn't get to work. We abandoned work yesterday afternoon and Not took 2 hours to go 6 miles to get home. I thought the student who took 4 hours to get home had it bad until one emailed at 3am to say it had taken them 11.5 hours and had only just got in.

Omg! My dgd lives a very sedate ( couch potatoe) life compared to everyone else's DC! Mind you when she was swimming it was 4 hours a day 3 times a week and 2 hours a day 4 times a week. She hasn't swam since she was 13 and hates any exercise now. I reckon it was all that swimming that put her off!
Her summer will not be as exciting either, but she is going to Rome with her mum after exams. We are also going to do Canterbury, harry potter world, oxford and Leeds castle.

Sostenueto · 02/03/2018 20:10

Crikey! @stickerocks its been bad here for a few days, but apart from minor roads clear since yesterday. As I said managed to get dgd home today but we had a minor blizzard at 5 pm which I think will be the last of the snow for us. I do, however, have a stinker of a cold after going out in the worst of it to rescue dd. Now in bed relaxing whoop whoop! Gin

Sostenueto · 02/03/2018 20:15

Dd said whole unit of chemistry revised this afternoon. I nearly fainted at the news!Grin

Sostenueto · 02/03/2018 20:20

Snow hanging about ( about 5 inches now and more where its drifted) and bitter wind chill expected to last till Sunday here. Good news is for once I will be getting a government cold weather payment for the very first time! Won't get it for about a fortnight's time though, but mustn't knock it I suppose.Hmm

Sostenueto · 02/03/2018 20:28

@the Donald dgd hardly did anything either the 4 days I had her. I was nagging her so much I felt like an ogre. But before I took her home I had a real serious conversation with her remix ding her for the umpteenth time that time was really short and unless she will be satisfied with 4 s and 5 s instead of 7-9s she had better pull herself up right sharpish! It seemed to work hence big grin that she had gone home and revised whole unit of chemistry today.

Stickerrocks · 02/03/2018 20:29

I'm a couple of miles from one of the roads where people were trapped overnight, including all the BBC reporters. My car has around 6 inches of snow on it. Not bad when you consider I live on the coast.

Sostenueto · 02/03/2018 20:40

@stickerocks that's how it was here. Down the road to me is another village about 3 miles away and they are cut off since yesterday where the high winds circa 60 miles an hour during Wednesday night caused 6 foot drifts! Here we had just about 20 cm all told. We did have drifts on main road out of village but now clear. Side roads are just ice rinks even now and slight inclines impossible. But no wind at the mo and temperature -2 so expecting a thaw weekend.

Sostenueto · 03/03/2018 01:15

Final sting in the tail from Emma. Snow drifted at back now 3 foot deep covering condensation pipe again so heating off again.

Sostenueto · 03/03/2018 01:20

This is the front so not going anywhere for a bit ( again) be safe, warm and well to all Flowers

GCSEs 2018 (4 already)
mmzz · 03/03/2018 07:58

@sost I expect you already know this but just in case I have some knowledge that isn't common South of the border: you need salt on that front door step and a kettle of boiling water to melt the snow around the condensation pipe.

DoNotBringLulu · 03/03/2018 09:13

I hope it melts for you soon Sost and heating is sorted soon. Keep warm.

The sun is out here and I am just about to walk into town to meet a friend for breakfast - the snow is quickly receding.

Any more mocks next week? School closed yesterday and they will need to rearrange a Maths exam. I've started getting ds to discuss History with me going through the revision guides - one topic is medicine; it is really interesting I'd forgotten all about Edward Jenner and his discovery of smallpox vaccination.

Sostenueto · 03/03/2018 09:34

Have dug round condensation pipe and gave it a couple of kettles of boiling water and away I go! Got heating back on thank goodness!
Going to try and clear ramp but later. Its so cold still. Thanks for advice mmzz!
