UKMT intermediate maths challenge kangaroo

My DS3 in Y11 has just informed me that he did well in the maths challenge and got 98/135. Looking at the UKMT website I think that means he's entered for the kangaroo but not the olympiad? Is that right? I'm obviously not as mathematically talented!

I'm really pleased for him because he's always been a bit in his brother's shadow, DS1, who is studying maths at Warwick after doing very well in maths and FM at A level, but never did better than silver on the maths challenges.

I have no real idea how good a score this is. Is it worth him mentioning it on his personal statement when that comes around or am I being a bit over optimistic? Smile

I don’t know how far back kids go in terms of what they add to personal statements. If he does better in the SMC next year that might be more relevant, possibly!

You are probably right! I just heard today of a pupil in a different school who scored 129! Just missed out one question and got all the others right. Amazing. Smile

Kangaroo is good though!
Mine got 130 and also made the BMO after the SMC, he loves problem solving! There are lots of options as they go on if he enjoys these things, including mentoring sessions and some great online resources via UKMT worth looking at.

Well done to him on qualifying for the kangaroo, 98 is a great score.

On the personal statement, he could include something about enjoying the UKMT challenges, especially if he does the senior one next year.

130! Wow! Shock

Thanks, Second. He goes to a normal comp and got the best score in his year, but I now realise it's not exceptional. Grin The DC I heard of with 129 got the top score in the local super selective grammar school.

DS3 will possibly change school for sixth form so I don't know what they do there in the way of the senior challenge. He's hoping to do maths, FM and computing and/or chemistry A levels and do maths at university, (rather like DS1.) This has certainly given his confidence a boost. I might not mention the 129/130 type scores to him!

DS2 entered but doesn't know his result yet. He likes Maths and enjoys doing the UKMT challenges.

My son’s also at the local comp like yours Ellen, a very mixed school. He’s lucky to have had a HOM who spotted him early on so they’ve given him lots of opportunities.

If your son likes it definitely get him to have a look st the UKMT website for resources to interest himself.

Our best was 109, a kid in Yr 7! But then we enter years 6-8 for the intermediate challenge. 2 Kangaroo entries in yr 6 and 8 and a Olympiad in Yr 7!

He is a maths genius though!

It’s all quite random though, depends on the day, a kid in Yr 6 didn’t do well enough for a certificate in the primary maths challenge but got a bronze in the intermediate challenge! Will see how he does in the Jmc in the summer term.

DS2 got 114, the best he has done in any of the maths challenges so far. Really pleased for him.

AhBut · 22/02/2018 20:58

Excellent score SECOND so nice for him to get that recognition 😊

What a lot of talented mathematicians!

DD just got her results from this today, strange the gap. She came top in intermediate in her grammar in both y7 and y8, she's y7, and got through to Kangaroo. Doesn't know scores just 10 or so y7s through.

penguinsnpandas · 17/05/2018 19:21

I think she must just have been entered for the junior one looking at dates, she told me intermediate but that was Feb.
