Hi, I've had a very reluctant reader in dd, but she is coming into her own for GCSE which I'm so pleased about.

She is asking for lots of books, for Eng Lit and Drama

So far I have Of Mice and Men, An Inspector calls, several Shakespeare,
She's done Animal farm and Lord of the flies.

They don't have to be currently used for the exams, would prefer suggestions for past titles.

Well 100 years ago I did Pride and Prejudice for O level.
Has she read To Kill a Mocking Bird?

To Kill a Mocking Bird

user1469682920 · 03/02/2018 18:35

Curious Incident of the Dog in the night time and for Drama Blood Brothers

gillybeanz · 03/02/2018 18:43

Aw, To Kill a Mocking Bird, brilliant suggestion. Thanks
Blood Brothers, also good. Thanks pride and Prejudice, fantastic idea, she just pinched my Jane Eyre.

So glad I started the thread.
Off to the cheap book shops this week, and charity shops.
I've never heard of "Curious Incident" but will look for this.

Oh, keep them coming Grin

Dc did Macbeth, Spies , I'm the King of the Castle, Woman in Black

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 03/02/2018 18:47

Handmaid's Tale

AtiaoftheJulii · 03/02/2018 18:51

Ds really enjoyed Never Let Me Go last year. Did not enjoy War of the Worlds!

AtiaoftheJulii · 03/02/2018 18:53

(Meant to say, ds very rarely reads fiction, so for him to say he liked a book was a big deal!)

PhuntSox · 03/02/2018 19:00

Emma
A Christmas Carol
To Kill a Mocking Bird
War of the Worlds

clearsommespace · 03/02/2018 19:03

In the last millennium for English GCSE I studied:
Macbeth
To kill a Mocking Bird
Far from the Madding Crowd

clearsommespace · 03/02/2018 19:04

Also Lorca's Blood Wedding play for drama. (May have been A level)

LittleTinyPig · 03/02/2018 19:06

Well if you really don’t mind past ones as in way back when I did GCSEs, we studied The Crucible, as well as some you have already mentioned. I have a feeling we also studied Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and poems by Wilfred Owen. Oh, and Catcher in the Rye. Looking back it was very American!

Drama we did Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, which I have to say I remember nothing of at all. And Macbeth.

gillybeanz · 03/02/2018 19:32

Thank you so much for the suggestions, it's so good to hear what others did.
Unfortunately, my schooling wasn't very good and I didn't make it to study O levels.
I'm well read now, but don't have that bit that can grade a book, iyswim.

Oh and extra thanks for the poem suggestions, I'd overlooked these in my OP.

If she's reading Jane Eyre, try following it with The Wide Sargasso Sea (which wasn't an exam text for me, but we did it in year 9 before Jane Eyre for exam)

AlexanderHamilton · 03/02/2018 19:49

Dd is doing A Christmas Carol but isn't much for it, still it's easier than Great Exoectations)

Set 2 are doing Blood Brothers (which she wishes she was doing instead of An Inspector Calls)

AlexanderHamilton · 03/02/2018 19:52

If she's doing GCSE drama then Curious Incident is performed By 'Frantic Assembly' who are classed as a 'practitioner' on the syllabus.

OneOfTheGrundys · 03/02/2018 21:54

Jekyll and Hyde.
Sherlock Holmes stories.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 03/02/2018 22:05

Frankenstein
Catcher in the Rye

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 03/02/2018 22:06

To Kill a Mockingbird
Streetcar named Desire

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/02/2018 22:10

Educating Rita is a great play.

DS really enjoyed The Book Thief.

Bigfatchips · 03/02/2018 22:14

I'm quite old and did Tess of the D'Urbevilles, Gulliver's Travels and The Secret Agent. I'd only really recommend the first, tbh.
