Anyone have a dc who did the 11+ entrance exam today? How did it go? Getting the impression that the current exam season is harder than ever this year ...

Do you think 'no' can also be in A4? Just received A4 envelope. So scared to open.

DC1 got a yes. To say I'm relieved is an understatement, I literally couldn't sleep a wink last night. Well done everyone; yes, a fantastic achievement in a nightmare year. At least DC2 will now count as a sibling in a couple of years ;)

Good luck sh111 Have everything crossed for you! X

Congrats testbunny! No letter today for us as the postman has been and gone. How frustrating Confused the post not there on one day when you need it to be... and I am out tomorrow morning...

We got a yes today from Emanuel! Still waiting on results from 3 other schools that haven't arrived yet, but such a relief to have an offer in hand....

sh111 call them. We did 10+ at another school before, and never heard as they put the wrong house number!

We got an offer from Emanuel today too. Very pleased for our DD. Do you know how ES compares with SCHS, as many of her classmates seem to have that as a first choice.

The main difference if is you want all girls or co-ed.

And think about the school run - what will the journey really be like for your DD? What if she wants to do an early morning or after school club? Is there a route you'd be happy for her to do in the dark?

What other aspects of a school matter to you?

We don’t have a strong preference between co-ed and single sex, to us what counts is the pastoral care more than academics, to be honest. I mean academics is also important, but I don’t feel it’s the be all and end all, to me my DD’s welfare and mental health is much more important and not to stress about needing to push herself to be among the top set because everyone else is much much cleverer around her and her self-esteem would therefore suffer.
In terms of distance, we would be a good 20min walking distance from Emanuel, as no bus gets there from where we live. To SCHS there is a school coach apparently stopping very close nearby, so perhaps a bit easier, but if that somehow fails or not available, we would need to drive her to school, which is not exactly ideal. We really liked SCHS when we visited, but from what we hear from other mums at school, people would choose Emanuel when it comes between the two as somehow it is seen as a better school in terms of both pastoral care and academics? I mean SCHS also gets good results but is Emanuel so much better than SCHS?

Any insight on Emanuel’s new head from current parents? I understand he was previously Deputy Head at King’s College in Wimbledon. Many thanks!

Mr Milne was deputy head and head of pastoral care at KCS, he was extremely popular with both boys and parents and is a very kind man. I am sure he is still finding his feet at Emmanuel but you are lucky to have him.

My son is at the school and Mr Milne seems popular with the students, from what I’ve seem as a parent he seems very capable too and given the academic levels have increased massively over the last couple of years I’d say he’s a good man for the job.

Mr Milne is a great appointment, in my opinion. Of course it is early days in his new post but he comes across very well and he has an excellent track record. I know several parents / boys at KCS and they all speak highly of Mr Milne, and feel that their loss in Emanuel's gain. As lottiebear said, the academic bar has risen enormously in recent years at Emanuel and competition is fierce.

As this thread seems to be a hot topic at the moment can I ask a question.
DD has an offer from
Emanuel and we are trying to decide between it and a couple of others, another Co-Ed and one all girls.
We both really liked Emanuel but it felt slightly like a boys school where they let girls in. Is that a totally wrong impression would you say?
DD is at a mixed primary school and is not super girly but does like gymnastics, dance etc etc.
We are going back to visit in a couple of weeks but just interested to hear the views of others who may have DDs there. Thanks!

Itschilly - I think there are slightly more boys than girls at Emanuel but it certainly doesn't feel at all like a boys school that lets in girls - far from it. It is a very happy co-ed and the children I've met have all been happy, confident and keen to learn. My child's class (Hill Form) is evenly mixed boys/girls and there are friendships between them all. There are lots of co-curricular opportunities for both boys and girls and my child is loving the sport, including trying some new activities, like Eton Fives, at lunchtimes etc. I've only been a parent at Emanuel for a short while but the teachers and coaches are excellent in my opinion.
