Revision tips for a child who struggles

BlackHillsofDakota · 02/01/2018 19:01

My DD is Yr9 at secondary. She has a couple of big exams coming up and we are really struggling with helping her to revise. She is in the bottom set throughout all subjects and really struggles to retain information. It seems it goes in at the time but she cannot recall it later which is a problem in exams.
Has anyone got any tips to help her, she is feeling very overwhelmed at the moment.
We have tried:
Writing it long hand
Bullet points on revision cards
Using BBC Bitesize
Reading back through her school books
I feel like she is destined to fail all her exams and this makes me feel so sad, obviously we are being positive and trying to help her as best we can but its very frustrating!

Has she tried doing lots of sample questions and past pa[er type revision? Lots of the books you can buy have shorts bit of text followed by mini question banks.

You can get flash card apps where you write both sides yourself but you can test yourself on the go, 5 or 10 minutes here and there. Small chunks but daily recap may help.

There are also online podcasts available for many subjects - listen and watch, followed by short recap questions/tests.

Practise answering questions. If she doesn't know the answer, she can use her notes, write a summary of the info and then trying to answer the question. Have her write quizzes for friends and vice versa.

She should be 'testing' her recall as often as possible.

To improve longer term memory, assign her a paragraph to memorise - a speech, a passage, something short to start with.

Practice makes improvement.

Highly recommend the book 'make it stick.'

Thank you, I'll have a look at the recommended book. We have done some
more tonight (science) and used a revision book with questions at the end of each section.
She needed a lot of help and couldn't seem to find any of the answers in the text but she seemed to enjoy it a bit more so hopefully if she likes it then she will stick at it.
