Good basic cheap-ish laptop for Year 7 DS?

To do his homework on? Rather he doesn't share mine anymore.
There are some I've found that are Chrome operated - apparently they don't require all the updates that windows do and are cheaper / faster. But would that be complicated? In terms of typing up documents? Can win / pdf files still be downloaded?

Hoping someone can come along to answer this, as I’m wondering the same Q....Promised to buy my DS one but not until he’s learnt to touch type so luckily that’s slowing him down a little....in the meantime I need to research best non expensive teen proof computer...
