Midyis scores- do i need to do anything about this?

My DS has just started yr 7, did the midyis tests a few weeks ago, and we got his scores last night. He got 134 in maths and 116 in non-verbal, vocabulary was 106, but his skills score was 93. Overall he's been placed in band a but I'm wondering if we should support development of 'skills'.

To be fair he's his father's son (engineer to the bone) and english is just something to be suffered at school though he does like reading at home and is currently into ancient histories.

Such a spiky profile could indicate a specific learning difficulty or underlying condition which means he may not achieve his potential without specific support.

For my daughter a sky high verbal score & average spatial score led to investigations which eventually led to us realising she has Aspergers.

Ds on the other hand has slow speed of information processing.

Can you afford a full private ed psych assessment?

Is he in Band A nationally for all schools or Band A for independent schools too?

Thanks AlexanderHamilton, the letter refers only to national bands, there's no mention of anything school specific nor of independent schools (he's at the local comprehensive school).

What sort of cost would I be looking for an EP assessment?

The school should have a plan though. Make an appt with the SENCO before you book a private assessment. I agree with the earlier post as a spiked profile like that, is usually something. It's definitely worth asking them for their take on it.

Another who agrees that a spiked profile needs looking at. It was a large discrepancy with scores in CATs combined with a few other things that made me get an Ed Psych report for DS which led to a diagnosis of Dyslexia. We paid as I knew we'd get nowhere with school as he was performing well at school, it was well worth every penny.

I agree that before you spend money, it's worth talking to the school to see what their take on the spike is. It will also depend on how he's performing in class and an overall A band is a good thing. They will probably be looking at the differences in the profile themselves.
