DS has just started Year 9 at a state school. He got into the UKMT Junior Kangaroo in Y7 and Y8 and got a merit in Y8. Although the school put them in for the challenge they don't do any extra preparation or tutoring for it. I'm aware of boys who were his peers at primary, but who went to private schools, are scoring higher, and getting into the Olympiad, but they're also getting a lot more tailored tuition. DS is bright, and competitive, but not massively hard working or diligent.
Anyway, he's just signed up for the DoE award and is thinking about a 3 month skill. On a whim I suggested he do the UKMT Junior mentoring scheme, and offered to find him a tutor/mentor (I could ask his maths teacher, but I know she's already snowed under so would prefer not to). He's surprisingly enthusiastic about the idea - he does like a challenge.
Is this a good and workable and appropriate idea, or not?
