Hard to belive that I was here 5 years ago sweating it out for the results of his secondary school offer!

Only a few days now bwfore the GCSE results come out. DS is starting to get nervous....as am I!

I'm with you now. DD's teacher feels an A at GCSE is a good measure of ones ability to cope with the impending A'level work. That's makes a lot of sense. Phew! Grin. Thursday never seemed so far away.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/08/2017 09:30

I had a dream about this last night. Ds had all these pieces of paper but I couldn't see a grade on them anywhere.
Hmm

Eusebius · 22/08/2017 09:34

Top - Hmm was she smiling?

CiderwithBuda · 22/08/2017 09:51

No back up plan here either.

Ds hasn't been at school since November. We were unsure whether he should actually take GCSEs at all this year but he insisted. He didn't do Spanish so will do that next year we hope. He needs five Cs.

If it all goes completely pear shaped I have no idea what we will do. He will have to retake but won't want to. School have been great so hoping for lots of support from them.

Frith1975 · 22/08/2017 09:52

Glad I've found you!

Son stormed his way through primary and high schools before having a nervous breakdown in December 2016. Only attended a few days after that.

His mocks were basically Cs, Ds, a couple of 4s and a 3 - after being predicted 8 As and a D. (There's never been much hope of his passing French!)

He gave up on the idea of A levels or Advanced diploma so has signed up to a course where you need 4 Ds to get in. Very practical course.

Anyway, I gave up work in April and taught him English, English Lit, maths (he didn't know any maths, which was fun...) and as much science as we could fit round that lot. French wasn't mentioned and we let history go. :-(

So yes, I'm nervous as hell...

justmumof1 · 22/08/2017 09:57

Frith 1975- it's hard when they are put under so much pressure.

euse

Not that I can recall. Shock

Hurry up Thursday !

justmumof1 · 22/08/2017 09:59

As this is our first time- how many of you have been through this with your other DC?

Have their results been close to their mock GCSE results?

First time for us, 2 years time we will be going through it again.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/08/2017 10:28

2nd for me.

DS1 did ok in the end. Thankfully !

Teddygirlonce · 22/08/2017 10:35

@justmumof1 first time for us too which is why it seems such an unknown.

DS's predicted grades were more Bs than As but he worked really much harder than in any of his other secondary school years, in the lead up to his GCSEs (mocks before Christmas), so think the tilt will be the other way.

But who knows? I am trying to sit firmly on the fence with regards to what grades he'll achieve. It could go either way really. Have a feeling that his school tended to underplay predicted grades to get the boys to work harder but that's a hunch...(I may be deluding myself).

DD did KS2 SATs this year and the school was very cagey about whether they thought she'd pass or not. I wasn't convinced either so was very pleasantly surprised that she did pass all three - phew. But until I opened the sealed envelope and saw the results for myself I had no idea!

dingit · 22/08/2017 10:46

Can I join you. Results day two for us, after A level results for dd last week.
Dd more or less got her predicted gcse grades. Ds is a completely different animal. Also dreading the new English and maths grades, maths being his worst subject.

CiderwithBuda · 22/08/2017 10:49

Frith huge sympathies. It's so hard watching them go through something like that. DS has been off with migraines but is now seeing a psychologist as it turns out its hugely linked with his mental health. Lots of people had suggested it but neither I nor DS thought it was. He even saw mental health nurse at school and she didn't think it was. He then asked himself to see someone. Thankfully we are in a position to pay privately so haven't had to wait. I hope your DS gets what he needs. Fab that you were able to teach him.

Eusebius · 22/08/2017 10:52

First time here too. I feel sick looking at StudentRoom, they all seem to be predicted straight A*s. I'm happy for them but DS who is like I mentioned earlier, very capable, barely studied. So if he does badly I can't even say, 'Well at least you did your best' Hmm.

Ontopofthesunset · 22/08/2017 11:03

Maybe the only kids who post on Student Room are the very high achievers! I can't imagine either of my boys even thinking about looking at that kind of chat room.

Eusebius · 22/08/2017 11:27

Yes you are 100% correct and I realised that eventually. I think DS and your boys will get on very well.

Frith1975 · 22/08/2017 11:29

Thanks, Cider and Justmum.

1st time here. Younger child will be taking GCSEs in 2 years but he has a statement of SEN (I suppose it might finally be an EHCP by then!) so we shall be aiming for the magic 5.

MrsBartlet · 22/08/2017 13:13

Second time going through this for me and I really have no idea how DS has done. He needs 5 As and 3 Bs to stay on for sixth form (he has 2 As and 1 B already which count towards this.) We have no back up plan and I have booked a long weekend away starting on results day. Luckily they don't go into school to collect their results but get them online.

Piggywaspushed · 22/08/2017 13:28

I'm an English teacher, DH is a maths teacher and I have a son in year 11.... do I win the prize??

DS is also glass half empty type and keeps telling me how many days it is until DH disowns him.

Fun times.

Danglingmod · 22/08/2017 13:33

Blimey, Piggy, you definitely win the thread!

CiderwithBuda · 22/08/2017 13:35

Yes Piggy - you win th thread. You might need this - Gin.

MrsBartlet · 22/08/2017 13:54

Oh dear Piggy - that is a stressful combination. You definitely win!

clary · 22/08/2017 14:07

Yeah Piggy you win, beats my yr 11 DD plus a mere 18 students in my French GCSE group this year. Hope all results go well in your house :)

BTW ds1 did GCSEs two years ago and did more or less as predicted - not academic but got Cs and Ds Inc C in maths which he has been very grateful for (lots of his mates have been retaking for the last two years)

Piggywaspushed · 22/08/2017 14:25

At least I win at something!

I shall be drinking the Gin

ifonly4 · 22/08/2017 14:40

Piggy, you might win the thread, but they'll be lots of us joining you with our own bottles!
