Starting year 7 2017

Anyone else with a child starting year 7 this year?

So far, we have bought the bag, topped up the pencil case and bought shoes (went for Clarks in the end).

I have bought DD this coat in an adult size 6 www.trespass.com/taniya-womens-waterproof-parka-jacket. She has to wear a black coat and has a blazer. This is will be for winter with a pac a mac waterproof for warmer weather. I keep being told they don't wear coats [Confused] but DD has quite a long walk to school.

I am not sure what to do about pe bags. She will already have a back pack so another of those won't be practical. I am thinking of a holdall bit as she has a locker, maybe just a fabric shopping bag?

My daughter is starting year 6 as well haven't got a coat yet as the girls don't wear them 😬 but got her a small brolly, I got a drawstring Nike pe bag which will fit in backpack or locker

What is with the no coats thing? I see kids going to secondary wearing blazers all year around - they must be freezing. My dd's new school enforces wearing a black coat Nov-Easter!!

Has anyone does a trial run of the journey yet? Good or bad idea?

My twins are starting Yr 7 this time. We have done uniform shopping (ouch - nearly all of it had to come from a specific shop) but haven't got shoes or school bags yet. Not going to bother with a coat until it gets colder. They have to walk to the bus stop and then from the bus to the school but I'm not going to shell out for coats if they're not going to wear them.

Still need to get umbrellas. Hadn't thought about a bag for PE kit. Will add that to the list...

All uniform bought, need to get new back pack and sports bag, calculator, pens etc. Haven't got her a coat as school is 15 miles away and no school bus

I got a drawstring sports bag from amazon. Now wondering about pencil case which they didn't have at primary - what to put in it? Need to do some public transport practice too. Mine's been very unsettled all summer, I'll be glad when the first week's actually here. And AIBU to say he has to wear a watch? I don't want him taking [old] iphone out every few minutes to check the time on the ourney.

Pencil case needs several pens, blue or black, Bic Biros are best (last longest) or some prefer those four-colour ones. Also pencils, ruler, maths instruments, rubber, sharpener. Scientific calculator too but maybe get that through school (cheaper).

W0rriedMum, unfortunately, the no coats things is due to the fact they're backpacks are crippling heavy and they have no lockers. pegs for their coats. The worst case scenario was when DD had her backpack, musical instrument, PE kit and cookery ingredients, there was no way she was going to get cold carrying that lot.

However, they do cope. We had a few ups and downs to start with, but she had a great time at her comprehensive especially the last couple of years.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 15/08/2017 16:36

Please name everything.

Perhaps pack a water bottle.

DD going into Y7 in Sept.

No coat so far as they don't wear them. Might persuade her when it gets colder.

Backpack for normal stuff. Victoria's Secret 'Pink' tote bag is PE bag of choice here lol. No lockers so have to carry a lot.

Watch bought so that phone doesn't need to be touched for time checks.

Shoes still to go. Kickers seem to be the choice most go for.

Dd just finished year 7. Coats thing is definitely true. I think the blazer plus jumper is warm enough apart from when snowing but agreed it's down to carrying stuff. My dd has a locker but never uses it as it's a pain to go back to it when she needs stuff as the school is fairly big so she carries pe kit etc round all day. Usually shoved in her backpack.

DD started today. I felt surprisingly wobbly about it all Confused. The coat was a no go in the end so we settled for a pac a Mac type thing with her blazer for now. It was really odd seeing her in her uniform.
