Hi have son in year 5 . About to go through the secondary application for brighton which is basically a lottery . Have been told by the admissions team that they will have more kids in our catchment area ( stringer varndean ) than there are places and some children will be sent out of the catchment to Longhill and baca . Having to think about alternatives . Can't afford private without re mortgaging but that is plan b - anyone know anything about shoreham college or lewes old grammar school ? I have Middle ability boys . Brighton system is a shambles so annoyed I might have to go down this route . Would appreciate any feedback on these two schools thankyou

Any views on shoreham college or lewes old grammar school ? What would be best for Middle ability boys ? Forced into private due to horrendous brighton lottery system

Hello OP

A friend went to LOGS and said it was a lovely school - from what I've heard, it still is. My friend started off at Brighton College but found it a bit too much (he is very smart - I think he found having school on Saturdays hard).

I don't know Shoreham College (I grew up in Brighton but moved away once I was an adult). Do both have the same travel time?

Thankyou that's good to know . Logs is easier to get to as he could get the train but shoreham does pick up at an extra cost . Fees almost identical . Our local secondary is stringer which is good but despite living very close to it we are still in a lottery with kids miles away and it's massively oversubscribed . I'm leaning towards logs but would appreciate any knowledge on either of them

The journey time to school is important - I remember being knackered when I reached the end of the school day.

Brighton College don't do Saturday school

To be fair, I am quite old. My friend would have been there in the 1990s.

I have heard it is a nice school from friends who live in Lewes. Have you been to see both these schools, OP?

Mumtobandt · 23/07/2017 18:14

I'm planning to see both in September but I think the views of parents who are already there can be helpful .

I hope that things go well for you OP. Friends still living in Brighton have said that the lottery system has added another layer of stress to an already stressful situation.

Do you have more info on Shoreham College?
