Laptop question

My dd is about to start year 10 in September and is finally in need of her own laptop for homework etc.
We have a limited budget and am at a loss where to start my search.
Can any-one recommend anything decent for about £250 absolute max?

I would go to PC World and get advice. In an ideal world you would get an i3 processor but I think it's unlikely and think they would be £330+ but one of my responsibilities is to buy our work laptops so I only tend to know about lap tops from £600 plus and even then I regularly ask pc World questions. John Lewis are also very good and give a two year warrantee. Their website is also good for filtering out unwanted laptops to see what's left. I always favour HP but again possibly too expensive and only personal preference.

If that's your absolute budget, then consider getting a Chromebook. Basically a tablet in laptop form.

This will allow DD to do her hw on Google docs, which for 90% of work is a fine substitute for Microsoft Office. A lot of schools are using this anyway, and it exports documents to Microsoft format.

It also means that any work she does will be automatically backed up to the Cloud and can be accessed from a school PC with ease.

Chromebooks run the internet the same as everything else.

Unless DD regularly needs to open and manipulate Office files, or has particular photo / video editing needs, then you will get a fast, hassle-free computer for the money with a Chromebook.

I'd take a look at the Which? website, they have good reviews of laptops at all price points. You can pay £1 for a trial and get the info and then cancel again.

Go for second hand. Good bargains
at Morgan. This is not an advertisement, I promise!
