Hi

We are looking into moving so that ds will get into our chosen secondary. Dd already attends there, we gor her in on appeal.

She will have left by the time ds goes, so sibling rule wont apply. We have found a house and i am tryimg to find out how far its from the school, for admissions. My questions are

How can we find out where they measure from on school grounds? Its an acadamy and is a huge site including its Sports fields.

How do we find out how far out the furthest children live that got in, in previous years?

I want to be able to measure where the house is, based on previous years.

Thanks

You can ask the school. Bear in mind that it can change from year to year- so there won't be any guarantees, unless you are actually next door!

The place they measure from can change?

Damn, i didnt know that. The school arr cagey about giving any of this detail.

When we appealed to get dd in, we never found out where they measured from.

This house maybe a bit far out. If its measured from where i think it was its ok, but if it moved to the other end of the site, it may not be.

Thank you for letting me know that.

I think Bertrand meant that the last admitted distance will change each year - not the measuring point.

BertrandRussell · 02/07/2017 18:38

No- the place they measure from won't change. The maximum distance for getting in might, depending on how many applications they have.

Saiman · 02/07/2017 18:43

Ah yes i know that might change.

But i am hoping to be well within the kast few years.

When dd got in (now just finishing year 8) the furthest child was 2.8 miles. The house we are thinking of is 1.3 miles.

If every year is around 2.8 miles i think we should be ok, but i get its not guarenteed.

Admissions are quite big there. 360 pupils per year.

Most schools, even academies, tend to use the LA measuring service as it is well set up. It measures distance digitally so can be very accurate - easily down to 1 metre. You need to look at the admission criteria for the school and somewhere on that it will say what is measured. Normally it is either straight line distance or nearest walking route. In both cases there will be a constant point on the school, which is usually either the main gate or a fixed point on the building - this is often called the seed point and is roughly in the centre of the building. It should say on the admission criteria where it is measured from - look in the information that comes after the actual admission criteria.
