KEGS Chelmsford, is it really that good?

We have two young sons and moved the Chelmsford area a few years ago. The boys are still very young but it appears that nowadays you can't start thinking about schools early enough. Does anyone have any experience with KEGS in Chelmsford?

We live about 30mins from Chelmsford but know the area qute well as DH worked in Chelmsford for 6 yrs. I have one DD aged 4yrs 4 mths and am expecting by 2nd baby (boy we think) around the 6th May! I don;t post much as I work full time so don't have much time to keep up with things but am going on mat leave soon and really looking forward to it.

Will do Nally - our childcare arrangements are in limbo as MIL who helped with DD when I went back to wwork has been ill and we are not sure if she will be able to cope with 2 DCs esp. a young baby.

jellybellynally · 27/03/2007 13:02

Tyakit - i was thinking if your dd is starting school in september then it would have to be a school in my area for me to childmind her, otherwise i wouldn't be able to take her or pick her up. i would be able to have your ds any time after september (dd2 will be a year old then), but you probably wouldn't want your dc to be separated.
michaelad - definitely up for a bit of babysitting.

Tyakit · 27/03/2007 14:07

Whoose kid? My DD is 4 and starts reception in Sept and DC2 not due until May.

Tyakit · 27/03/2007 14:07

Coffee sounds good - may bit a bit busy with newborn just after school hols .

michaelad · 27/03/2007 18:01

This is probably way too late for the poster to see my reply, but anyway, KEGS is a really good school, that is why there are so many prep schools in and around the Chelmsford area priming their pupils to pass the 11+, (anecdotally) I don't think anyone gets in from a state school on the school's teaching alone, they have all had private tutors from around year 4 onwards, all of the prep schools include in their prospectus a list of the schools where their children went on to at 11, and they are judged on their % that get in to the girls school or KEGS

Lizzy61 · 08/06/2007 13:26

Really late answer. KEGS and Chelmsford High School take on marks from their entrance exam alone. I think KEGS takes the first 105 and CCHG take about 120 and you can apply whether you live in Essex or not. If your kids are really bright you have a chance.

Anyway I am up for coffee (have 2 daughters - one 13 and one 3)...

bjsylo · 14/11/2012 21:47

It is a closer time now for you to be thinking about this! My son went to KEGS and I have one there at the moment, and as long as they can get into the KEGS banter then they will love it there! Highly academic and although it doesn't focus on average students, only the strugglers or high flyers, it is a fantastic school with a great atmosphere and rich history

nallylally · 03/07/2014 19:03

Yay! DS got into KEGS!

mychildrenarebarmy · 03/07/2014 21:38

Congratulations nallylally Straight off or from waiting list?

KEGS HONEST REVIEW 2/ 5

KEGS IS AN OK SCHOOL HOWEVER DUE TO THE FACT IT HAS BEEN ELEVATED TO A NEXT LEVEL THAT IT IS NOT ACTUALLY AT IS A BIG ISSUE

THIS IS NOT THE ONLY ISSUE WITH THEIR BEING MANY DIFFERENT SOCIAL , CRIMINAL AND LEARNING ISSUES IN THE SCHOOL

FOR WORKING CLASS PEOPLE KEGS MAY NOT BE THE SCHOOL FOR YOU DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU AS MOST PEOPLE FROM KEGS AND OTHER GRAMMAR SCHOOLS HAD ATTENDED PRIVATE SCHOOLS PREVIOUSLY. EVEN THOUGH THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO KEGS SPECIFICALLY IT HIGHLIGHTS AN ISSUE IN THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL SYSTEM AS IT IS NOT CARRYING OUT ONE OF THE MAIN FUNCTION's WHICH ARE TO ALLOW BRIGHT WORKING CLASS CHILDREN TO MAKE THE STEPPING STONE THROUGH THE SOCIAL LADDER

MANY KIDS ALSO CRITICISE OTHER COVER STAFF AS THEY FEEL THEY ARE SMARTER THAN THEM AS THEY WENT TO A MORE PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOL OR ARE RICHER OR GREW UP IN A BETTER AREA than Them.

THE WAY THE SCHOOL DEALS WITH ISSUES IS COMPLETELY ABSURD AT TIMES WITH PUNISHMENTS BEING GIVEN ARE UNREASONABLE

THERE IS ALSO A SLIGHT YET OBVIOUS RACIAL DIVIDE WITH MANY STUDENTS OF A certain w colour making RACIAL REMARKS such as P and N*. Thus there are not often that much integration between people of different of ethnicity.

IF you DO NOT LIVE IN THE PRIORITY AREA IT IS HARD TO MAKE GOOD FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE AS PEOPLE DONT LIVE TOO LOCAL WITH EACH OTHER , for example someone who LIVES IN CHELMSFORD AND SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN CHAD WELL HEATH WILL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO LINK UP WITH EACH OTHER IN SCHOOL HOLIDAY DUE TO THE difference between ESSEX AND LONDON AND THE COST AND JOURNEY OF TRAVEL. EVEN SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN ILFORD AND SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN HAROLD HILL WILL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO LINK UP AS EVEN THOUGH THESE AREAS ARE BOTH IN LONDON IT IS A 20 minute drive and 40 minute bus journey. THIS WILL LEAD TO KIDS MISSING OUT ON MAKING LONG LASTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PEERS

ALSO JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SCHOOL , 95% of the kid use SWEAR WORDS IN THEIR LANGUAGE EVERDAY

AS WELL AS THIS FOR CHILDREN COMING OUTSIDE OF THE PRIORITY AREA KEGS CAN BE VERY TIRESOME DUE TO THE COST OF TRAVEL AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME IT TAKES FOR THE JOURNEY TO OCCUR. THIS IS ONE REASON WHY KEGS CAN BE A STRESSFUL SCHOOL. THIS GIVES CHILDREN LESS TIME TO STUDY OR RELAX.

IN EVERY SCHOOL THERE IS SOME CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR AMONGST STUDENTS AND THIS HAS MOST DEFINITELY HAPPENED TO SOME ( GREAT OR NOT great) IN KEGS .... NO FURTHER COMMENT .... AS WELL AS THIS MANY KIDS AS YOUNG AS IN YEAR 7 TO YEAR 11 BELIEVE THEY ARE REAL GANGSTER HOWEVER THEY DO NOT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THAT LIFE AND DO NOT KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES THAT END UP WITH RISKING YOUR FREEDOM BOTH MORALLY + SOCIAL

KEGS ALSO HAS SOME DECENT TEACHERS ROUGHLY 15- 20 ( WITH ROUGHLY 6-8 BEING AS EXCEPTIONAL AS THE EDUCATIONAL STANDARD KEGS HAD PROMISED WHEN YOU AGREED TO GO THERE) BUT THERE ARE SOME NOT SO good TEACHERS WITH THERE BEING ABOUT 20 OF THESE ( 9 ARE TERRIBLE)

IN TERMS OF DEPARTMENTS , THE BETTER ONES ARE THE HISTORY , CHEMISTRY , MATHS , D.T

THE MFL DEPARTMENT HAS SOME GREAT TEACHERS BUT ALSO SOME QUESTIONABLE TEACHERS

THE OK DEPARTMENTS ARE ART , CS , BIOLOGY , MUSIC , ECONOMICS

SUBSTANDARD - ENGLISH , GEOGRAPHY , P.E

TERRIBLE - PHYSICS ( LACKING - GET ON JOB B!) , PSHE

HOWEVER KEGS HAS GOOD EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SUCH AS ECONOMICS SOCIETY , DRAMA SOCIETY/ SCHOOL PRODUCTION , D of E , Ancient LANGUAGES , EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES , MANY SCHOOL TRIPS , SPORTS and CORE OF DRUMS / CCF

THE LEARNING MENTOR SCHEME IN KEGS IS VERY GOOD AS IT ALLOWS OLDER SIXTH FORMERS WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE SITUATION OF DOING GCSES TO HELP STRUGGLING STUDENTS WITH THEIR WORK

KEGS DOES PROMISE GOOD GCSE RESULTS HOWEVER THEN AGAIN ANY SCHOOL EVEN OAKS PARK PROMISES GOOD RESULTS PROVIDING YOUR WILLING TO PUT IN THE EFFORT. HOWEVER KEGS DOES HAVE SOME EXCEPTIONAL TEACHERS THAT WILL HONESTLY IMPROVE YOUR GRADE AND ACTUALLY CARE FOR YOUR ACADEMIC STUDY

THERE IS MORE TO SAY

THIS HAS BEEN DONE BY A FORMER STUDENT AT KEGS SO THE JUDGEMENT IS HONEST

hertsandessex · 08/11/2017 13:07

How can you go to KEGS and not learn about Caps lock? Also I had to laugh at the comment about the English department being substandard given the grammar and punctuation on display.

mountford100 · 08/11/2017 13:41

Another derisory comment, given by a poster that does not agree with what someone's posted !

Maybe the poster concerned has a number of unsorted issues with King Edwards Grammar School, Chelmsford.

However, as is customary on here, some posters are looking for a posters perceived week spot. This is usually regarding grammar, spelling, punctuation or in this case ; the application of the posting.

It is easier to shut down a poster, by declaring that because their use of grammar or punctuation is poor ; their opinion or experiences are worthless.

You have no idea whether the poster, attended KEGS or didn't, similarly he/she might have achieved 3 A* A level grades ; for all you know !
