Does anyone know how this is marked, what they are looking for etc?

DD has hers tomorrow but all she seems to know is that it has to be 5 minutes long and about something interesting!

Our board is Edexcel. The criteria is as your DD says with pass, merit, distinction grades. No bearing on actual gcse mark. They need to be able to answer questions as well as give a prepared talk.

Vast majority of our students got a pass. Good talks achieved merit. Only a handful of our cohort of 200+ got distinction.

Thanks Keira.

Do you know how much is based on the content and how much on the presentation? DD has written a great speech but is likely to mumble her way through.

Also does she need to learn it or can she read from the page?

Dd did a mock of hers earlier this year (year 10 but near start) and got a distinction. Think the lasted about 5 or 6 minutes with q and a after. Don't think she had a mark scheme though and has the real one coming up I think. Can be same one or different.

BonnieBlueButler · 11/06/2017 14:44

I'm an English teacher. Partly it'll be about content, as the mark scheme talks about expressing challenging ideas for a distinction. Also, it'll need to be interesting to engage the audience. Much of it will be based on presentation. Also the ability to answer questions and perhaps elaborate in her answers.

We are doing AQA and encourage students to talk about something they are passionate about. We've shown them clips, parts of documentaries to try and inspire them. I'm preparing my Year 10 class for this at the moment.

If it's edexcel, reading is a fail. She'd be better with notecards rather than a script.

TheDonald · 11/06/2017 14:49

It's AQA but she has been told not to read a script.

How odd,ds is doing AQA but says he's did his oral "ages ago" Hmm

Apparently he's doing English Language tomorrow.

ChrissyHynde · 11/06/2017 14:56

I believe it's English language tomorrow as well

Jaimx86 · 11/06/2017 14:57

The oral/spoken can be done at any point in the year when suits the student/teacher. It's the AQA GCSE Language Paper 2 tomorrow.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/06/2017 14:59

Ah right, thanks. Minor panic over Wink

TheDonald · 11/06/2017 16:08

She's y10. Sorry to panic you!
